Richard Bibb BSc (Hons), PhD is Reader and Head of Medical Applications at The National Centre for Product Design & Development Research (PDR), University of Wales Institute, Cardiff (UWIC), UK. A stake through the heart of both Judaism and Christianity

Sherlock shows how Judaism and Christianity turned the Egyptian, Babylonian, and Persian myths and practices into a theology using plagiarism and deliberate falsehoods and then subverting the mythology by claiming it was a divine revelation. He chronicles how Christianity started by indoctrinating the young and the ignorant and using Martyrs, Persecutions, and apologists to propagate their virus until they could finally infect an emperor.

This began what Sherlock calls “The Brutal Theocracy of the Christian Dark Ages”:

“With all these components in place, Christianity eventually took control of the Roman Empire and they became one of the darkest and most destructive forces this earth had possibly ever witnessed. From the torture and slaughter of men, women and children, to the suppression of knowledge both ancient and contemporary, the Christians earned a reputation as being the main characters and proponents of the European Dark Ages.”

In the final part of the book, Sherlock discloses the true origins of the Judeo-Christian myths in the older testaments. He shows that this unoriginal collection of myths was derived from earlier mythologies that were available to the creator(s) of the scriptures. When one sees the correspondence between the ancient myths and belief systems and the Judeo-Christian scriptures, there can be no doubt that his claims are true!

Another Homerun

Michael Sherlock has hit another homerun. The second book in his I Am Christ series entitled The Resurrection is well written and thoroughly researched. It discredits the foundations of the Christian religion.
Christians assume their faith spread to become the world’s largest religion because it was true. Sherlock shows otherwise. Sherlock’s research indicates the real reasons for the spread of Christianity were the invention of a great product (eternal life) and the use of force.
In a similar way, Christians assume their gospels are history books. Sherlock makes a convincing case that in fact the gospel stories were taken from ancient pagan myths.
Most depressing for me was his discussion of Christian ethics. Jesus teaches “by their fruits, you will know them,” that we will recognize Christians by their actions. Sadly, more people have died in the name of Jesus than any other person in history. From Sherlock’s careful research, this is merely the tip of the iceberg.
This is a disturbing book for the two million Christians living today. Based on the fundamental problems Sherlock discloses, there is no way the Christian religion will survive as we have known it. My solution is to reinvent it. Sherlock’s solution is to reject it. From his perspective, belief systems like Christianity only close people’s minds and prevent them from growing up into authentic individuals. The two books he has written on this central theme cannot be dismissed lightly.

Knitting socks from the toe up has a few advantages: you can try on the sock as you knit, and you can adjust the height of the cuff to the amount of yarn you have. Johnson provides�five different techniques for starting a sock with the toe; three different heel techniques; several cast-off options; as well as instruction on knitting using double-pointed needles, two circular needles, or one long circular needle. The best of the best

Glorious photography, extraordinarily helpful illustrations, beautiful designs accompanied by pattern instructions written with clarity and precision. And it doesn't hurt a bit that Wendy is warm and funny and as generous as they come. (If you're a fan of her blog WENDY KNITS none of this will come as a surprise.) These are new designs (none of them are replicated on her website or sold elsewhere) and they all bear the hallmark of a true master of her craft. I'm a cuff-down sock knitter but have already cast on for a pair of toe-ups a la Wendy. (The Trilobites, if you must know!) Yes, she's a friend of mine but believe me when I say friendship flies out the window when you cast on a pair of socks. Life's too short to knit a pattern you don't love and now that I have my copy of SOCKS FROM THE TOE UP in my hands, I'll be happily knitting Wendys for the foreseeable future. (BTW, Wendy obtained permission from Judy Becker to reproduce the Magic Cast-On.)

To sum up, this books works on all levels: great patterns, beautiful photography, clear instructions, a warm and engaging author, tutorials for the novice sock knitter, breathtaking patterns for the experienced. Definitely a keeper!

Definitive Book on Toe Up Socks!

Knit socks? Want to? Wendy D. Johnson's book Socks from the Toe up has something for everyone from the beginning to experienced sock knitter. Starting with an extensive techniques section on parts of the sock and how to knit them from the toe up, there are 3 "vanilla" sock patterns. Following the plain socks are 20 patterns for socks from "Dead Simple Lace" to traditional Gansey patterns. None of these patterns are available in another source with the exception of the "free" pattern released in advance of the book.

The basic sock patterns are all knit in plain white yarn so you can see the techniques in detail, the photography in the book is beautiful and the line drawings are all clear. A new sock knitter could start at the beginning of the book and knit every sock using the techniques and the experienced sock knitter will find interesting and beautiful patterns while learning a little something new! The sock yarns used are all widely available, so you won't spend a lot of time trying to find the exact yarn in "that" colorway if you fall in love with the sock on the page!

so happy to finally have this!

i love knitting toe up socks, and i'm a big fan of wendy's website and her patterns, so i was very excited to finally get this book!

the photography is beautiful and really illustrates the patterns well. plus, the book itself is high quality (the paper, the cover, etc.)

the patterns are all wonderful, and i want to knit almost all of them, but i think the best part of this book are the "vanilla" patterns because they explain in detail the different types of heels AND they have detailed pictures SHOWING the different types of heels.

i think this book would be good for anyone who loves knitting toe up socks or anyone who wants to TRY knitting toe up socks. there are some more difficult patterns of course, but there are definitely quite a few that beginning sock knitters could handle.

all in all, i am VERY pleased with this book and will happily recommend it to any of my sock knitting friends.

This isn't a critical review, but just a note to remind everyone that this edition is indeed in the original Italian (rare to find on Amazon.com), and includes a post-script appendix not included in the original releases.
P.S., just this once, don't rent the movie. Treat yourself and see how much more you get out of it.

Italians sometimes deserve more attention

I am amazed that this novel - the most popular, the best-loved, the most imitated in Italy during the latest 20 years- is so little known abroad.
It is a very good historical novel, full of intense and fascinating characters, which can reliably belong to European Middle Age. Eco' s culture is immense: he can easily quote from Latin, ancient French or other languages. But the big mystery in this book is an ancient Greek manuscript, the book _On Comedy_ fom Aristotle's _Poetics_. It is very hard to believe that such a manuscript really existed, and, as a matter of fact, at the end of the novel it gets destroyed. A terrible loss for the main character, Guglielmo di Baskerville, but a dreadful victory for superstition and ignorance.
Tje plot is very intriguing (it is a detective story). Some friars are murdered, and nobody can understand the reason...nobody excepting Guglielmo. Who is nothing but Sherlock Holmes, while his young assistant, Adso, is nothing but Watson...

But the reference to Conan Doyle is not the real purpose of this splendid book, where you find such an enchanting gothic atmosphere as very rarely you can do. The real matter is the rescue of European culture, which nowadays seems to be overwhelmed by the so called 'globalization'.
I suggest this reading to everyone, American, Asian or African people.
The movie is not so bad...Jean-Jacques Annaud understood very well Eco's lesson. But the book is something very, very special.

Umberto Eco's masterpiece. In one of the very first editions.
A book that rich cannot be transposed in a movie.
And the best would be if one would know italian and old latin language.
Anyway, good work the movie too. Dark atmospheres: better the blu-ray edition.

Mumtaz!

I've been working in Arabic instruction for years and this is just the kind of book students need to move beyond beginning vocabulary. The approach works for learners with a variety of learning styles. It's well thought-out and clear in its presentation. I've written Arabic instruction materials myself, and I must say, I'm a little jealous of the author's accomplishment! There are not many resources out there that can be used with or without an instructor. This book can serve either kind of learner well.

A good book, one of it's kind, but could be better

I've got this book in my hand for some weeks ago. I have bought, during the years, other arabic grammar books of different levels. This book is really one of it's kind. It really fills it's purpose and should be in the bookshelves of all arabic students. But it could be better. I've studied the words of the 10 first chapters closely.

Some advice: if you are not going to study arabic seriously, you can buy this book. But if
you are planing to study arabic for some time, wait a while before you get this book. Why?
See my points below.

Negative points about this book:

1. It does not define want kind of arabic it uses: MSA or dilect or both?

2. It does not distinguish between MSA-words or dilect-words (there are some few).
You have to have studied arabic for some time before you can distinguish words
that are not MSA.

3. It does not inform what kind of vocalization scheme it uses.

4. The vocalization differs, especially when the words end with shadda-ya. You
have to look in the dictionary yourself to find out.

5. There are some words (less the 5 % though) that are wrongly spelled:
mostly it's the vocalization that's wrong. But sometimes the grammar is totally
wrong: example: page 55: Safraa'a is spelled in dual Safraayaan and not Safraawaan.
Sometimes you find verbs that don't just exist: 'tahabbaka' (F.V, to knitt) it should be 'habaka'(F.I).

Having said this, I really feel that the book gives me alot of usable words
under very well chosen topics. I miss one, though: computers and data.

Great entry level book!

This is the second Arabic lesson book in my collection, for Arabic studies. My first was a lesson book to learn just the Arabic alphabet, and this book blended well with the pace that I was studying. This is truly an entry level book that encouraged me to keep learning. Great Job!
