THE book for Undergraduate-level physics
By Twilight Dweller
Clear, well-motivated, concise and focused. This is a masterpiece for sophomore-level physics.

Each topic starts off with a clear motivation and slowly leads the reader deeper into the topic through a logical path with just the right amount of mathematics. There are no gratuitous paragraphs or missing links, making the learning experience a focused one. A true testimony of economy of thought.

This book is fundamentally different from other undergraduate physics texts that dominate the market like 'Resnick and Halliday, Sears and Zemansky, Serway, Tipler, etc.' in that all topics are integrated into a coherent whole. A student does not simply read a chapter in Mechanics and forget about it when he advances into Electrodynamics. The later chapters make use of the foundational knowledge acquired in the prior chapters and builds upon it. This is unlike many other physics books that seem more like a disparate set of topics strung together with no apparent link.

No unnecessary examples are given and where they are given, they serve to illustrate and reinforce understanding of certain principles or ideas. This is also in contrast to other physics texts that profess a lorge number of unnecessary worked examples that serve to drive in the same point. There are no fanciful coloured diagrams or glossy pages. This book is serious about educating the reader in physics and it goes straight to the point.

A note however to beginning physics majors: this book makes unscrupulous use of calculus. But once a student has mastered undergraduate-level calculus, the learning experience is a rich one and the profits that he can reap from this book are immense!

A vigorous Physics Treatise without glossy pictures
By A Customer
As Physics should be! Alonso and Finn provide a vigorous treatise of the subject with a great deal of calculus. That is not necesarily bad as--contrary to the belief of fresher students--physics is about mathematics. Alonso and Finn's book has certainly made it into the category of Classical Physics Textbooks as much as the "Therory of Relativity" by Albert Einstein. It is ashaming that in the US the book did not seem to get the right credentials, but given the many translations of Alonso and Finn's book into European languages, this side of the Alantic the book has had a very positive resonance indeed. And just take a look at the very extensive list of reviewers of the book: This list tells the potential buyer of the book that really great minds have been working on it: Professor Tomas Bohr (Copenhague, Denmark), the late Professor Karl Luchner (Ludwig Maximillian University Munich, Germany), Professor William Poon (University of Edinburgh, Scotland) etc. etc.
All in all a very satisfiying book for first year physics students and beyond.

The Ghost of Physics Past
By Peltio
I bought this book years ago, after having read the three volume edition upon which this single tome is based. Sadly, I have to say that this is only the ghost of what those precious little books were.

On the plus side I appreciated the effort placed in rearranging the material, by letting 'modern physics' just be 'physics'. Perhaps the rearrangement has gone a little too far in electromagnetism, where electrostatics and magnetostatics have each been split in several chapters (interactions, currents, fields), forcing the student to flip back and forward too many times, but all in all it gives a fresher view of the discipline.

But cutting the number of pages to accommodate three volumes in one has had its toll on the book. It has become superficial, basing the explanations by focusing on the most elementary examples only. Only a fraction of the interesting derivations of key results has been retained. What's worse, a lot of stuff (especially from former tomes II and III) has been left out, and even the exercises (that in the three volume edition provided a lot of insight and were designed to guide the student in the -few, well... fewer- derivations of key results that did not find room in the chapters) have been trimmed down.

Following the new way Alonso and Finn (or their publisher?) have chosen to explain physics, let me say that it can be demonstrated that this edition is too watered down to be useful to the serious student. The detailed demonstration, though, goes beyond the scope of this review.
And it's not even left to the reader as an exercise.

If you can find the three volumes of the previous version of this physics course, grab them. *Those* were nice Physics Books (especially the first and third).

Review
This is an interesting, thought-provoking book, which leads the reader to question the apparent divides between theories in Psychology, Sociology, and Biology through giving examples from the far reaching work of Freud - especially dream analysis. - PSIGE Newsletter, Jan 2000

From the Back Cover
From literary theory to social anthropology, the influence of Freud runs through every part of the human and social sciences. In The Lure of Dreams, Harvie Ferguson shows how Freud's writings and particularly The Interpretation of Dreams contribute, both in their content and in the baroque and dream-like forms in which they are cast, to our understanding of the character of modernity. He argues that the recent tendency to view Freud's work mainly as a product of nineteenth-century developments in biology and medicine have obscured what is most important and suggestive for us in his writings. Instead Harvie Ferguson discusses the development of Freud's ideas in the context of the Viennese fin de siecle culture in which they were nurtured, and examines the extent to which they reflect a breakdown of classical forms of rationalism in both the sciences and the arts and, more generally, the rehabilitation of dreams in late modernity. This novel and stimulating approach to Freud and to the dilemmas of modernity and postmodernity will fascinate everyone with an interest in the development of modern consciousness.

About the Author
Harvie Ferguson teaches sociology at the University of Glasgow.

From Publishers Weekly
PW's starred review praised this fictionalized memoir of a refugee childhood in post-WWII Japan as "beautifully direct and emotionally honest." Ages 11-up.

From School Library Journal
Grade 5 Up-In this moving sequel to So Far from the Bamboo Grove (Lothrop, 1986), Yoko Watkins continues her family saga. In extreme poverty, the Kawashimas-13-year-old Yoko, her 17-year-old sister, and her 21-year-old brother-struggle to survive as refugees in post-World War II Japan. After a slow start, this autobiographical novel gains momentum as the young people lose their wretched temporary home and are accused of burning a warehouse and committing a double murder. With the aid of new friends and personal aplomb, they find clues that clear their names and lead to the discovery of the true culprits. Along the way are fascinating details of how they make do and manage to preserve their dignity; the cruelty and humiliation Yoko endures in school; the interesting friendship they share with a Burakumin (outcast) couple; and an emotional reunion with their POW father, during which they must tell him that their mother died six years ago. The style here is a great improvement over the previous book, though some stilted dialogue still intrudes. The author is at her best in narration, skillfully building suspense and getting readers sympathetically involved in Yoko's difficulties and triumphs.
John Philbrook, San Francisco Public Library

From Booklist
Gr. 6-10. In the fictionalized autobiography So Far from the Bamboo Grove (1986), Yoko and her Japanese family escape from the Communist takeover in North Korea at the end of World War II and finally reach Kyoto, Japan, only to find themselves unwelcome there. This sequel has the same quiet honesty about ordinary people caught up in terrible times. Yoko's first-person narrative tells of a once secure middle-class child now homeless, hungry, and in danger. Mother is dead; 13-year-old Yoko and her older brother and sister struggle together to survive in Kyoto, scavenging for scraps, working at anything they can find, even cleaning toilets. Father is a prisoner somewhere; the hope of his return is like a heartbeat in everything they do. Driven from their warehouse home by fire, they find themselves accused of arson and murder, and they help the police solve the murder mystery. However, the core of the story is not the big events, but the family drama and the home the young people make together, whether in a shack or a hospital room. Their loving bonds are strong, but they're also irritable and nervy. Yoko hates her sister's bossiness, especially the insistence that Yoko go to school. The school scenes are brutal: the rich students torment Yoko as an outsider; even when she graduates with top honors, they don't want her in the class photo. Yet Watkins doesn't indulge in self-pity. Except for some occasional overwriting ("I sighed sadly"), the violent suffering is treated with restraint, as in the unforgettable vignette of a scarred atom-bomb survivor who dies an outcast. The climax builds to Father's return, and his homecoming is described with the intense understatement that characterizes the best parts of this compelling story. Hazel Rochman

This is a beautiful description of her life. People who criticize her because of nationalist propaganda should rethink what fuels the bias.

a book everyone should read
By Jane E Zirinsky
when I was in middle school Yoko Watkins came to my school to talk about her experience in WWII Japan. My class read her first book, So Far From the Bamboo Grove, prior to her lecture. That book so affected me that I immediatly read My Brother, My Sister, and I. This book is what turned me into a reader and made me interested in a world greater than my own. I laughed, I cried, I changed as a person. highly recomended
