A New and Better Perspective on Writing Prompts

If you're looking for inspiration and writing prompts to tickle your own creativity, this book may be just what you're looking for. I found several ideas I could easily transform into completely new and intriguing story starters. Author Colby seems to have a fresher and more creative perspective on romance than most "writing prompt" authors. Most of these books are just a rehash of the same old tired - albeit tried and true - cliched story ideas.

These books are good, but I prefer the Genki series. I have used both, and both are good, but I think that the grammar explantions in Genki are more clear then they are in the Situational Functional Japanese books. The Genki books also include Hiragana, Katakana, and Kanji practice as part of the book were as this series does not. Though I do think that these books have richer vocabulary lists per chapter than the Genki books, but I would still recommend the Genki books for their grammar explantions and the fact that they include Kanji practice.

A very grammar intensive series and perfect for students who do better with grammar than with vocabulary. Not much focus on kanji or vocabulary and that is one drawback, but there are other supplemental materials to make up for what this series of books lacks. The drills books are very useful.

As a result, many of the watersheds of the Pacific coastal ecoregion no longer support natural settings for environmental processes or the valuable natural resources those processes create. Another good very short introduction from OUP

Another good very, very short introduction book. Even if the book is good, it is inevitable in a small 130-pages book, that most of Russian history is described quite succinctly , but it is good enough to give a good sense of its main events: the slow formation of a nation, the need for centralized government and even for absolute power due to the constant threat of invasions, from the East, from the South and from the West, the conquest of Russia by the Mongols, its liberation, the Russian Empire, its decline and finally the Soviet Revolution, the Soviet Empire, and its final dissolution, up to Putin's sad times

Good Introduction

If you’re unfamiliar with Russian history, this is a good book for you. Before reading this book, I really didn’t have much of an idea of Russian history and culture other than stereotypes and the really big concepts. Hosking’s Russian History will take you on a journey through time, concisely, and with as much detail as possible in such a short book. Russia had a rocky start, with occupations and all kinds of different leaders, and leadership styles.
An important part of Russia’s history is religion, which Hosking is sure to not let us forget. When describing the Mongol occupation, Hosking writes that, while some thought of it as a disaster, for the Orthodox church, it “was almost a golden age”, because the Mongols were “tolerant in religious matters” (Hosking 8). It was so important to Russian culture that their religious beliefs were kept safe. Religion was also the usual justification for leadership. While for much of Russia’s beginning, one family ruled it, the tsars who came after often said that they were chosen by God, with Peter the Great going as far as to say he “was directly answerable to God for the greatness and security of his state and the welfare of his people” (Hosking 37). This just re-emphasizes how important religion was to Russians.
Another very important aspect of ruling in Russia was the approval of the nobles. Nobles in Russia enjoyed a large amount of power, and often influenced who could be put in charge, as illustrated with the example of Emperor Paul. He thought that the nobles’ were too privileged, and “abolished their abolished their exemption from state service, … ended their freedom from corporal punishment, and curtailed their right to travel abroad” (Hosking 49). A group of Guards deposed and murdered Paul for these then absurd ideas. It was ridiculous to go against the nobles like he did, and he paid for it with his life. It makes it all the more impressive the change and reform that Russia later underwent. After defeat in the Crimean war, it was decided to abolish serfdom. This was a major change, especially for the ruling class, who was opposed to such a measure. This, and other reforms around the same time, created a “much more changeable and differentiated society” (Hosking 74). It made it possible for peasants to “become literate, to diversify their economy, to work in towns, on the railways and rivers, to serve in the army and then to return to civilian life” (Hosking 74). It was really paving the way for a new Russia.
All in all, I thought Hosking’s book was very easy to understand and follow, especially for someone who knew very little about Russia and Russian history before picking it up.

Better Available Soon, if not already.

It was fairly helpful although woefully incomplete considering the vast number of wildlife we observed that were not represented in this book. We eagerly await Ken Behrens book on the subject, which is due to be released soon. If you are considering the Bradt Guide, I recommend you check to see if Ken's book is out and get that instead. Ken's "Seawatching" is such a fabulous book, I know his new Guide to Madagascar Wildlife will be indispensable. I only wish it had been available for our trip.

Purchased this book for upcoming trip to Madagascar and to be used as a reference book. There are wonderful color pictures and maps included in the book and it is small enough to carry in luggage without adding too much weight.
