Not bad - well worth buying!

My wife told me this was great puzzle book!

She also told me that that, so far, there are fewer mistakes than in the 1960's book. The difficulty is about the same however. This has been another big hit with her overall.

The hardest puzzles have involved 1950's slang, female and male names. Since she was born in 1957 that has limited her knowledge of those areas somewhat.

She uses this to help keep her mind sharp and to keep busy when waiting for a doctor, etc appointments.

She rated this one 8.5 to 9.0 out of 10 - well worth buying!

Was one of the worst books i have evr received

Was one of the worst books i have evr received. First there were words (like 5 letter) and no space for 5 letters. Then i would go under a catgory of lets say one clue said 16 letters- i would take that word in the 16 word line and their would be 17. Two words were never found in the puzzles. I looked at solutions (my two adult children did as well) and no words in solutions. There was a 13 letter word under a 12 letter word. Very frustrating and would NEVER buy again. Go buy another book not this one. Very dissatisfied!!!!! nannyellen@aol.com

Interesting compilation of old Hoodoo spells

Talia Felix's "Conjurin' Ole Time" is a slim volume packed with historical hoodoo spells with some commentary from the author.
The book is divided into two sections --one that deals with common ingredients and another which consists categories of spells and recipes for the desired outcome. The first section has the most interesting material as the author uses different sources to trace well known hoodoo ingredients. I particularly enjoyed the black cat bone section --as gruesome as it is, it had information i didn't know and an unapologetic transcription of the methods used to acquire the special bone. The second section has a lot of spells but it's written in that style you find in George Hohman's "Long Lost Friend" or Albert Magnus' "Egyptian Secrets" --meaning spells that are about a paragraph long with basic instructions on how to mix/use the ingredients but without much else. It lacks the emotion and psychological aspect of putting the spells into action. While an in depth explanation of what it is like to make hoodoo might not have been her goal, she could have done a bit more to contextualize the spells. The cathartic experience of going through a complex ritual to get rid of one's personal life obstacles is, to me at least, the most important part of hoodoo's rituals. She seems experienced in making gris-gris and mojo pouches so she could have gone into some detail regarding the care and emotion that goes into making one. In spellwork the process is as important, if not more, than the ingredients.
The books is not for beginners, She makes many references to things like Hyatt's informers (sources), the Petit Albert, and such without at least one sentence to explain what or who they are and why they are considered cornerstones of hoodoo. While the more experienced do not need such introductions, people new to the field might be left wondering about their importance. (Though she does get extra points from me for name checking my hero, rogue publisher L. W. DeLaurence whose influence both on hoodoo and occultism in the USA is often ignored.)
Ms. Felix could have done well by teaming up with a good editor to tighten up her work and make her more aware of her reader's various points of view. Her writing style often comes across more like blog entries than anything else. She's often unnecessarily self referential --mostly with disclaimers regarding things she's not sure of or hasn't researched enough. She would be well served to be reminded that her readers are not very concerned with what she doesn't know as they are buying the book for what she does know. She sometimes comes across as a person who is both extremely confident and highly vulnerable at the same time.
A good editor could also have helped her out when she discusses issues of race. I'm assuming she's not an American as she seems clumsy when the issue of race comes up and sometimes leads to some cringe worthy moments. As a New Yorker i tend to come across this mostly in conversations with Europeans. They don't mean any harm but are blissfuly unaware of the numerous subtle issues and intricacies Americans have with race and ethnicities. A book about hoodoo, a subject deeply tied with the evolution of race relations in the USA, should be more cognizant regarding this part of the discussion.
Overall i would say the book is worth adding to a library of American grimoires but Talia Felix could well benefit from a partnership with a sympathetic editor who could help her bring her writing to a higher level. She has the resources but needs some help to use them to their highest potential. I would give her three and a half stars but Amazon only allows whole numbers so unfortunately i'll round down to three though she deserves a bit more.

HOODOO is not witchcraft/ ritual styles ... it is very simple and Christian based.�

Today there is something called the internet. Why does everything have to be spelled out to people today? If YOU have interest in something, do you not seek the knowledge?�

Moreover, why is it necessary for the writer seek an editor... to critique the author's raw writing style... to interrupt/tint it to suit who? i felt a connection to the author's writing style and information giving was uncut and raw... we call real... all drink no chaser, perhaps, that is the goal... surely that is more important than mechanic. i feel when deciding to critique someone's writing to the extent that you went, a full understanding of the author's intent, targeted audience, and knowledge of the subject matter should be thoroughly examined and taking in account before bursting out with an academic type critique; with that said, we all can read that you have some kind of writing skills, perhaps a English degree or something, good for you, big words and shyt... i have several degrees in psychology and it never made me feel self important nor in my academic pursuit did institutionalized education loosen my common sense or abandon me from the real world or everyday world perspective. Perhaps you need more courses to understand all different styles of writing (like folk writing) and target audiences and course work or at least proper research in Hoodoo would be best suited in this subject matter, i really mean that. Now this is just a recommendation due to the fact that you "appear" to be somewhat educated. Furthermore, i notice your jumbling, binding the subject matter (Hoodoo) with occultism, "complex rituals" and your use of the word "spells /spell" over and over (written like a witch) instead of words like tricks or fixes lead me to believe you do not know jack about Hoodoo.

Let me inform you with a simple glimpse into the subject matter of Hoodoo. Hoodoo IS an African American Southern conjuring point blank. ANYTHING a practioner add to the practice from there is very personal. i give you an example: Adding the practices of Voodoo to Hoodoo. That would be the practitioner’s religious believes (knowingly or not knowingly). Why? because Voodoo is religious/occult based and if the practitioner told you no it's not that would be a lie. Here is where common sense kicks in; if it walks like a duck, quack like a duck it is most likely than not a duck. The example giving here can be gained through research in the history and practice of Hoodoo, interviews with the author other well seasoned practitioners. This pursuit trumps just reading a book and expecting the author to just lay information out there for you; moreover, even if the author did just that, a person would still be at lost until he or she do his or her own personal research; go in depth and not just depend on free websites that give just enough information to promote the sale of their hoodoo items that are most likely just color water with artificial fragrance or mash up rocks and dirt or paid consultations that take advantage of a foolish people (i digress here), or self published books from Amazon or believing in unbelievable critique that appears to have authority in a particular subject matter when the actuality the person do not have a clue.�
• Lastly, i suggest to you to stay in your lane, and leave the conjure writing critiquing to the true practicing Hoodoo conjures. Your so-called academia, only book reading knowledge, non-Hoodoo practicing, new age witchy based critiquing on a subject and writing styles that you absolutely have no clue about, ZERO... Has no relevance to beginners or seasoned practitioners. Perhaps your lane is witchcraft, wiccan, etc. Stay over there. Moreover, HOODOO, is NOT an OCCULT (not Voodoo etc.), It is NOT an RELIGION... it is NOT RITUALISTIC in nature, for example, there are many personal ways to turn ONE trick for a purpose (like money drawing). What is it? It is faith based and Christian base...point blank. No ceremonies, chanting away, no rituals, No witchcraft bull shyt. it is about action, the bible is the center, believing, herbs, incense, candles, mojos, attracting, removal, healing, fixing, etc... and all one needs is simple common sense, belief, simple everyday tools and ingredients to simple yet powerful tricks (some practitioners are more gifted than others). One can produce big results through simplicity, there is nothing complex about Hoodoo. The practice is always personalized to fit the individual/ the practitioner wanting results. People reading this, please do your homework and watch out for critiques like this one.

A sustained ideological campaign vilifying Muslims has been underway since the rise of globalization. Edward Said has shown us that "othering" the "Orient" was essential to colonialism. While this is a seminal notion, a broader overview demonstrates how the "othering" of the Arab East has undergone many stages since the Crusades and how these shifts reflect the changing position of the West. Using examples from Dante to warrior-diplomat Ibn Munqidh's memoirs of the Crusades, we will demonstrate that the relationship between the East and the West in pre-modern times was a relationship between rivals. In contrast to the modern era, each side certainly believed themselves to be the morally and religiously superior without essentially dehumanizing the other. On the other hand, the way the West stereotyped Muslims during the colonial period and Cold War differs in ideological intent and consequences from the vilifying of Muslims since Desert Storm and the rise of a unipolar world. This campaign is not a political "conspiracy" launched by some secret cabal that has taken over the White House. Rather, the campaign is "ideological," emanating from various, even competing, political and cultural strata within American and European society. These competing strata are bound by an ideological position that configures Muslims -- in the Middle East and as immigrants in Europe-- as an obstacle to globalized "humanism," "civilization," "modernity" and liberalism. In this respect, the campaign is less a campaign against Islam the religion than it is against Muslims, those living in a region of critical economic and political interest to the US Empire.

Over the course of the next three years, Mary worked at several residences, spreading her pestilence as she went. In 1907, she was traced to a home on Park Avenue, and taken into custody. Institutionalized at Riverside Hospital for three years, she was released only when she promised never to work as a cook again. She promptly disappeared.

For the next five years Mary worked in homes and institutions in and around New York, often under assumed names. In February 1915, a devastating outbreak of typhoid at the Sloane Hospital for Women was traced to her. She was finally apprehended and reinstitutionalized at Riverside Hospital, where she would remain for the rest of her life.

Typhoid Mary is the story of her infamous life. Anthony Bourdain reveals the seedier side of the early 1900s, and writes with his renowned panache about life in the kitchen, uncovering the horrifying conditions that allowed the deadly spread of typhoid over a decade. Bloomsbury launches its "Urban Historicals" series with a pair of books on both New York's most infamous cook and what (if true) would have been the city's greatest hoax. Bourdain, the chef and author of last year's cheeky Kitchen Confidential, attempts to retell the story of Mary Mallon from a cook's perspective. Early in the last century, the Irish immigrant Mallon became notorious as "Typhoid Mary" and was imprisoned by health authorities on an island in the East River after (unwittingly or not) spreading typhoid to 33 victims, with three confirmed deaths. Like Lizzie Borden, Mallon has received various writers' interpretations, the last in a 1996 biography by Judith Leavitt of the same title (LJ 5/15/96) that told the tale with more health science and a less cranky style. Bourdain chooses to light the story's shadows by relating to her as a once-proud, broken-down cook, interpreting Mallon's infecting spree with a kitchen-hardened aplomb and New York attitude. Chapter titles tend toward the snarky and hip ("There's Something About Mary," "Typhoid sucks"), and only a New York guy would describe bacteria settling into a gall bladder "like rent-controlled pensioners." Yet when, at the work's end, Bourdain makes a cook-to-cook offering at Mary's grave, it somehow feels more moving than stagey. Rose, a novelist and founder of the 1980s literary magazine Between C&D, has created "an entertainment, a reimagining of a piece of the past that may well have been imagined in the first place." His light-handed telling concerns a possible hoax from about 1824, when a butcher and a carpenter in New York's old Centre Market purportedly discussed their plan to solve overbuilt Manhattan's dangerous bottom-heaviness by sawing it in half, turning the top part of the island around, and reattaching it at the Battery. Word spread, and the enormous project seized the imaginations of Manhattan's poor, who showed up by the hundreds with saws and shovels, while merchants set aside enormous stores of food for the expected work crews. So, at least, claimed one of the hoaxers years later in a conversation with his amateur-historian nephew. Instead of being the "Crop Circles" phenomenon of its day, however, there seems no reason to believe the sawing scam was put over on anyone beyond the credulous nephew who first recorded it; Rose is quite aware of this and puts this re-embroidered lore into entertaining context, along the way creating a charming, atmospheric portrait of old New York. I Learned a Great Deal of Fascinating Information

A non-fiction historical account about the life of Mary Mallon, Mr. Bourdain's perspective is unique in that it views Ms. Mallon's life not only from her perspective, somewhat, but also from the perspective of a professional cook. While his adherence to this perspective is not strict, his analysis is well researched and feels very complete.

The story is engaging for the most part. The author's personal observations are entertaining and lively, however, a few of these side trips digress and detract. That said, I did come away educated not only about the life and circumstances of "Typhoid" Mary Mallon, but also about the times in which she lived.

A brisk read, I recommend reading this at times of the day, or night, distant from meals, especially if you're dining out at unfamiliar establishments. As I read this account, I had in my mind a three star rating. Upon completing it, and in retrospect, I had learned a great deal of fascinating information and genuinely felt that I had gained something from the experience. Increasing one's knowledge is a worthy exercise and Mr. Bourdain's offering indeed accomplishes this.

Well worth the short time it will take you to read.

Strange story

The term "Typhoid Mary" is sort of a cliche--the person who spreads around the plague in the office or the person whose homecooked dinners invariably have you sick the next day. But there WAS a real Typhoid Mary, a woman of Irish descent who worked as a plain cook and wherever she worked, a trail of infection and deaths followed her. What I didn't know was that Mary Mallon was actually imprisoned to keep her from working and infecting the public. That was shocking and sad.

Bourdain is his usual crochety self, advocating for kitchen workers everywhere, a profession of hard work, outright abuse and chronic underpayment. It's fun to read his writing and he comes through in the narrative, making a dry subject of epidemiology and sanitation as interesting as any of his other memoirs.

I read it all in one go--it was that interesting!

Cook to Cook

This is a really good book about a woman who is well-known by a lot of people, including microbiologists, of which I am one. Anthony Bourdain tells a story of a woman who probably didn't know anything about the situation she was in and didn't have any other way to make a living. He writes with a lot of compassion towards her, and I understood more about her side of the story than I think I ever have. I really felt pity for her, and I don't think I have ever felt that when hearing about her in classes that I have taken. Thank you, Mr. Bourdain, for giving me another viewpoint. You made her come alive for me, as no one else has ever done.

Dennis Alan Nawrocki is an adjunct professor of art history at the College for Creative Studies and Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan.

David Clements is a professional producer and director of radio, television, and photography. His work also appears in Talking Shops (Wayne State University Press, 2005).

Like Detroit... feels barren

I really wanted to like this book. Alas, it's a good idea poorly executed. Beginning with its misleading title (quite a bit of the artwork is found outside the confines of Detroit City Limits), Art in Detroit Public Places is a narrow paperback stuffed with photographs and descriptions of public works of art in the Metro area.
Each mosaic, statue, or sculpture is given a lone, poorly reproduced black and white picture apparently taken from the same angle by David Clements. How can a picture snapped from across the street capture the impact of something like The Heidelberg Project? A solitary monochromatic image eschews the splendor of the enormous collection of junk with its telephone poles decorated with doll heads and artist Tyree Guyton's ever-present motif of playful polka dots. I've seen inept tourists take better pictures.
Alongside these pictures, Dennis Alan Nawrocki pens sketchy descriptions of the works, their creators, and their current status. It's rather ironic that this is the second edition of the work as the writing is aggravatingly set in the present. One would hope that the language would be given a more indefinite time frame. Instead of saying "recently" or "currently," it'd be smarter to have dates cited.
Even the maps that precede each of the five sections of the book are problematic. These graphics are slightly better than if a dot-matrix printer had produced them. In addition, very little effort would need to be expended to list the location of the artwork in succeeding pages on these maps. While this might seem a trifling issue, it exemplifies how Art in Detroit Public Places is an overly ambitious, under-produced mess. (ISBN: 0814327028)

A heartbreak and a smile

As I read this play, my family is in the process of moving a thousand miles away from the farm where I grew up. Though I am so far away from the Russian culture and time of this play, the themes of place, tradition, and inevitable change resonated inside of me, and I am grateful to Chekhov for the way he has handled them.
The Cherry Orchard is a play about change, and the symbolism is pretty easy to recognize. What makes it stand apart, I think, from a thousand other plays on the same theme is its wonderful sense of comedy, of smiling sadness. Chekhov all his life insisted it was a comedy. As the Cherry Orchard slips away from the Ranevskys, they seem to smile at its going. As they are unable to change their habits -- still lending money they don't have, still spending extravagantly -- they quietly laugh at their own foolishness. The change comes, and they leave, heartbroken -- but embracing the change at the same time, only feebling struggling against it. One feels saddest, in the end, for Lopakhin, the new owner of the Cherry Orchard. He seems to believe he has bought happiness and friends, but is quickly discovering the emptiness of money and possessions, as no one wants to borrow from him, and no one seems to pay him much heed at all.
Chekhov paints with a fine brush, and I appreciate that. There is no thunderstorming, no ranting and raving in this work. There is a fine and subtle, sad and comedic portrayal of a family and a place encountering change. It is a heartbreak with a smile.
The translation, though the only one I've read, seems good. It is easy to follow and rich in simple feeling.

Timeless

The Cherry Orchard was me first experience with Chekhov, and I was surprised at the depth in this 49 page play. By no means would I considered myself a "literary expert," but this was very readable and you can pull a lot of the deeper meanings and its context in Russian history by yourself. I was confused at a couple people who write that the simply couldn't understand it and it put them to sleep! It's not THAT tough! If I could understand and appreciate it, almost anyone can!
What I like most about Chekhov is that he doesn't simplify his characters. He's a realist in this sense. Lopahkin and Trophimof each have admirable and detestable characteristics, just like you and I. While it may be set in the tumultuous period prior to the Russian revolution, the ideas and the discussions this play provokes are timeless.
Highly recommended!

Kindle edition NOT the Tom Stoppard translation!

I bought the Kindle edition of Anton Chekhov's The Cherry Orchard under the impression that it was the translation done by English playwright Tom Stoppard as the authorship of the item clearly states in Amazon's description. However, upon examining the title page of the Kindle book I was shocked to see someone else listed as the translator. I have not read this translation and therefore cannot review it, but I am extremely disappointed that Amazon is misrepresenting this item and they need to dix it!
