Dr. Stephanie Lieb has been adjunct professor of art history at the University of Cologne since 2009, and from 2011, has been head of studies in art and architecture at the Catholic Academy in Schwerte. She has published widely on the architecture of the 19th, 20th and 21st centuries.

On Board Flight 666

To the uninitiated, this may very well appear to be quite simply a heavy metal coffee table book - nothing could be further from the truth! In reality it's a tremendous 250-page photo documentary, captured in jaw-dropping brilliance, by official band photographer John McMurtrie - who was the seventh member of IRON MAIDEN from 2008 until 2011. The man behind the lens has published over 600 unbelievable pictures, all snapped while the band criss-crossed the globe. Beginning with the Somewhere Back In Time World Tour, and wrapping with the Final Frontier World Tour, this truly terrific hardcover tomb gloriously showcases Maiden's rabid and fanatical following. But what makes the whole endeavour even more special, is the fact that vocalist Bruce Dickinson piloted the group's specially equipped Boeing 757. Dubbed Ed Force One, this one-of-a-kind airliner carried band, crew and 12 tons of equipment across every continent, with the exception of Antarctica and Africa. Yes, the man who belts out `Run To The Hills' and `Can I Play With Madness', in addition to countless other classics, flew the plane as well. In an overly thorough foreword, Dickinson describes in detail what it took for him to get this truly unique "flying tour bus" in the air. Short of being a pair of sweaty, stage-worn socks, getting closer to Eddie - decked out in a Los Angeles Lakers jersey - is damn near impossible.

Insider view of behind the scenes for Iron Maiden tour

A very well presented book that chronicles the back story of just what it takes to successfully carry off a world tour. Add to it that the lead singer is also the pilot of the B-757 makes it even cooler! Inside views of the 757 and cockpit, planning and development of the special cargo area for the band's equipment and dealing with the safety and regulatory issues as well.

Photos and stories as Iron Maiden wings their way around the globe with Captain Bruce Dickinson at the controls. Very cool indeed.

One story that stuck with me was the flight to Japan which was diverted and the concert cancelled due to the horrific events of the earthquake, tsunami, and nuclear powerplant disaster. Very real and very human.

Highly recommend this book for anyone who is an Iron Maiden fan, loves aviation and the B-757. Just an all around great read.

On Board Flight 666 is a first class collection of awesome moments in the life of Iron Maiden. With the acclaim the band is garnering after over 30 years of great music, this book captures the band as they really are. Great captions alongside many of the pictures to tell where, who and what is going on when a particular picture was taken. It is a tragedy there are no other books throughout Maiden's storied career that capture the same essence of this bands greatness. If Maiden were to make a book similar to On Board Flight 666 from the bands inception to now, you'd need a forklift to get it off the ground! That is the length of history this band has. A great addition to any Maiden collection. Up the Irons!

Helen Craig McCullough (1918-1998) was an eminent scholar of classical Japanese poetry and prose. Her scholarly publications include 11 volumes of studies and translations. She co-authored with husband William H. McCullough the monumental two-volume translation and study of A Tale of Flowering Fortunes, whose authoritative notes and appendices make it an encyclopedia of Heian court life. Her books provide authoritative interpretations of masterpieces in classical Japanese literature. Other titles include Tales of Ise, The Tale of the Heike, Anthology of Poems Ancient and Modern, and The Great Mirror.

A good book, but best supplimented with another

This book is a good reference grammar, and very good for the student of Classical Japanese. However the Japanese vocabulary in the book is not explained well, and it is all in romaji. I would recommend anyone who buys this book to buy a good grammar or dictionary with it. Such as the new Classical Japanese: A Grammar and Classical Japanese Reader and Essential Dictionary books.

A must for students of Classical Japanese!

This reference manual is a concise, yet thorough overview of the Japanese language of the classical era. As stated in the preface, its mere aim is to "bring together useful materials from Japanese reference works in a form convenient for Western students using the classical language." And so it does, with many references from the more well known writings, such as Genji Monogatari, Makura no sooshi, and Man'yooshuu, among others. The manual is carefully divided into various sections, based on grammatical function; vocabulary items are then introduced, with its various semantic values and its Modern Japanese cognate, or equivalent. Subsequently, examples are taken from a piece of classical literature to illustrate the particular vocabulary item's function--this method helps to maintain a high level of retention. Overall, this is a wonderful little book that is a lot more valuable than it actually costs...it is an investment that is priceless!

Tracy A. Seiden's Stardust and Fire: Tales of a Hopeful Romantic comprises a collection of seventy-one poems about the many varying aspects of heterosexual love, passion, desire, attraction and romance. The first of the short pieces, "Childhood Forever," comes close to conventional rhyming poetry, but it is the only one that does. It serves almost as an introduction to the rest, which encompass the thoughts, dreams and longings of women of any age. These are all free verse: some divided into sections and others that Ms. Seiden simply allows to flow.

Stardust and Fire: Tales of a Hopeful Romantic is a title that captured my imagination before I opened the book and read a single word. Tracy A. Seiden held my attention; every poem led me on to the next. "Dance" is so incredibly expressive it truly does dance, as do all the pieces involving dancing. In Divine Love, the woman encourages her man to be protective, and "fuels him to be the man he was meant to be." "Peace of the Soul" echoes that theme. "Stardust" is thirty-eight flowing words, clever and utterly different. "Fire," the other title word, is best expressed in "Warrior on Fire." There is eroticism too in "Heaven's Door," "Black Magic Symphony," and "Did He Feel It."

The surprise was "Dark Wings Broken." My personal favorite is "Don't," a clever contradiction, or is it "A Winter's Queen," or "Reflections" and "life is a cycle, never ending"? The contention for a favorite is powerful in Stardust and Fire, and Ms. Seiden expresses herself as a "hopeful romantic" in every poem.

I grew up an only child in the suburbs of the Midwest wandering through the woods letting my imagination build a fantasy world of grand adventures. �I was an avid reader, often finding myself lost in the pages of some book, strolling through the halls of the author's imagination, wondering if I could write that way someday.I grew up reading poetry and always had a fondness of the outdoors, romance, and a wonder of finding a deeper connection between people. �In high school, English was my favorite subject.The years advanced and I found myself in a career, having fallen away from my reading and the thought of writing until I began soul searching, once again happening upon my love of words, of weaving an escape, a world in which I could write a romantic thought or story about how nature moved me. �So it is that this collection of words finds its way to you. �It has been a dream of mine to write and I am grateful for this chance to share it with you.

A heavenly collection

Tracy Seiden's first book Stardust and Fire is a glorious cornucopia of poetry which will enchant and delight. Tracy has a certain esoteric expertise that just weaves the most beautiful stories, making use of both childhood and old-age themes and ideas. Also many of the pieces serve as analogies of important life events. This book is kinetic from start to finish, breathing new life into the reader. It would make a wonderful gift for a friend or a loved one. I am most delighted to add it to my poetry collection and strongly recommend that you do too.

Tracy has a way about her all her own and each of the poems are inspiring and moving. .I can feel her passion in the text and am honored to have this book in my collection. I read a lot of poetry and this is a unique collection and incredible work. If you are willing to be moved in all aspects, this book is for you.

Essential guide for business writers

I'd recommend this book for anyone who needs to write as part of their work - and that includes most of us!

It's packed full of simple writing tips to get you writing in plain English - but what I really liked was the debunking of the grammar myths. These are "rules" that you might remember from school or college (or heaven help you, a grammar book) that get in the way of writing clear, concise, conversational writing at work.

This is good value book and well worth the investment, not just for the grammatically perplexed but for anyone who wants to be a master of plain English.

It's a great guide to grammar and suggestions of how to write better business English. Littered with some real-life examples of corporate-speak this guide stresses simple, effective writing without jargon.

Terence Denman makes this normally stuffy topic quite readable and easy to follow. A book for almost anyone who writes as part of their job.

It's designed for the British English market so may not be as useful for the US market, still, some of the rules and ideas are timeless.

Dr. Kai Qian:

Dr. Kai Qian is a Professor of Computer Science and Software Engineering at the School of Computing and Software Engineering, Southern Polytechnic State University. He has published over 50 research papers in various professional journals and proceedings of international conferences. He got his Ph.D. of Computer Science and Engineering from University of Nebraska in 1990. Dr. Qian has taught embedded systems courses for many years.� Dr. Kai Qian has authored books in Component-Oriented Programming with Wiley in 2005; Java Web Development(2007), Web Development with JavaScript & Ajax Illuminated(2009), and Software Architecture & Design Illuminated(2009), with Jones & Bartlet .

David den Haring:

David den Haring is a Project Manager at Atronix Engineering, Inc. located in Norcross, Georgia. Atronix is a system integrator specializing in automated control systems and middleware that integrates the factory floor with enterprise-level systems.

David received his Bachelor Degree in Computer Science from Southern Polytechnic State University in 1998 and has 20 years of industry experience.

Li Cao:

Li Cao obtained his B.S. degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the University of Illinois Urbana Champaign. He has worked in IT industry. He is currently working on his Master’s degree in Biomedical Engineering at the University of Texas at Austin.

About the Author
Born in 1968 in Niodior, Senegal, Fatou Diome moved to Strasbourg in 1994. She has taught at Strasbourg University and currently presents a cultural programme on the televison station FR3. She is the author of a collection of short stories called La Preference Nationale. The Belly of the Atlantic is her first novel.

A great read

Full of lush, lyrical language, philosophical sayings and descriptions of village life on the island of Niodior off the coast of Senegal, the novel is fairly short but manages to cover a lot of ground. Narrated by Salie, a native of Niodior living in Paris, it covers themes of individualism vs. collective identity, gender roles, the impact of colonization, and identity. Also addressed are the role of Islam in the community of Niodior, especially on gender roles and the identity of women. This is a worthwhile journey through the two different worlds that Salie moves between as well as her own inner journey toward finding an identity of her own.

An okay read

I ended up wanting to like this book a lot more than I actually did. It was a good cultural study of a country that I know next to nothing about. Simply reading this gives a hint of the lives of the people there; of course I had to do more research to understand the relationship between France and Senegal that's so talked about throughout the novel. Some of the important themes include colonization and the aftereffects of separating from the overpowering country. These are things that I know people around me don't think affect countries today. We're so absorbed in our little bubble that we barely think about how other cultures continue to experience oppression every day simply because they grow up believing that another culture is so much better than them.

Salie was a good character but I feel like most of the people in this narrative were flat. This felt less like a story that had a beginning and end than a snapshot of their lives. While that is not necessarily bad, because I feel like it was well-written, it began to lose my interest. This may have also been because I have no real interest in reading about football or football matches, even if I might enjoy seeing them in real life.

I did like how wonderfully the village life was described, contrasting the lives of immigrants who live in France. I also liked hearing about the different perspectives each character had on France or Senegal's place within the world.

While I'd recommend this book to people who are looking to expand their reading or learn about other countries, I think that there might be better novels out there. I haven't experienced them for myself yet and obviously no book like that has entered the mainstream.
