KGB's Poison Factory: From Lenin to Litvinenko, by Boris Volodarsky

In late November 2006 the whole world was shaken by a ruthless assassination in London of former lieutenant colonel of the FSB (the Russian security service and a successor to the KGB) and British citizen Alexander Litvinenko. This has been the most notorious crime in the past 30 years committed by Russian intelligence on foreign soil. Former Russian military intelligence officer and international expert in special operations Boris Volodarsky shows how the Russian poisoning operations started with Lenin and his Cheka, the predecessor of the KGB with intelligence operatives creating poisons and delivery methods as well as planning and carrying out poisoning operations all over the world in order to eliminate the enemies of the Kremlin.

Review

"Here, for the fan of murder thrillers and modern history alike, is a cracking good read. In brilliant light we see what lay for nearly a century behind the London polonium poisoning of British citizen Alexander Litvinenko, former Russian. With original research guided by his insider's eye and scholarly care, Boris Volodarsky recounts scores of murders. Assassination emerges as state policy, as institutionalized bureacracy, as day-to-day routine, as laboratory science, as a branch of medicine researching ways not to stave off death but to deliver it in apparently innocent or accidental forms, and as engineering technology, devising ever-new devices to meet each new requirement, from umbrella tips and cigarette cases and rolled-up newspapers -- to Litvinenko's teacup." Tennent H. Bagley, former CIA chief of Soviet Bloc counterintelligence.

Library Journal

In September 2004, Ukrainian presidential candidate Viktor Yushchenko was poisoned by dioxin, which caused severe illness and disfigurement. In October 2006, journalist Anna Politkovskaya, a critic of President Vladimir Putin and his handling of the Chechen conflict, was shot to death in Moscow. In November 2006, former KGB officer Alexander Litvinenko was poisoned by polonium-210 and died after several days of agony. Litvinenko was known for publicly alleging that the Russian government was behind numerous acts of terrorism against its own people, including Politkovskaya's murder. These stories are familiar to most who follow international news. What many people do not know is that this type of assassination has a long history extending through Soviet regimes as far back as Lenin. Volodarsky, a former KGB officer himself, provides evidence that eliminating enemies by poisoning or other means is still business as usual in Russia, despite the political changes of the past two decades…[The KGB’s Poison Factory] will fascinate students as well as general readers interested in international espionage.

About the Author
Boris Volodarsky is a former captain of the GRU Spetsnaz and currently an independent intelligence analyst, a member of the World Association of International Studies (Hoover Institution, Stanford University) and has written a number of articles on intelligence for the Wall Street Journal. He lives in England.

Pretentious & Vacuous
By Sonechka
"Groundbreaking study" - "Full Details of Litvinentko Murder" - "Nothing of this sort has ever been published." These adulatory blurbs are not citations from actual book reviews. In fact they are so out of line with the reality of the book that I suspect they were written by the author. I would also bet that Zenith is a well-disguised vanity press. The book imitates the dramatic style of startling revelations by genuine investigative journalism, but does not offer substantive new information on the Litvinenko murder or the murderous history of the KGB. What you will find is a massive jumble of details presented with no effort by the author to select or distinguish what is relevant from what is irrelevant. Insight? There isn't any. Regarding Litvinenko in particular, nothing new is offered in the book that wasn't already stated in Volodarsky's article published the day after Litvinenko's death, in the St. Petersburg Times on 11/24/06. I confess to not providing an illustration in this review of the book's alleged faults, because it would be exceedingly laborious to quote and analyze sample globs of text. There is nothing to be gained from it, e.g. separating the wheat from the chaff, because it seems all chaff. I wrote this short-cut review to save others from buying the book based on the blurbs. Alas, I naively took them seriously, but the punch-line is that no one seems to be buying the book anyway. P.S. The other review was written by the author after being offended by mine. I doubt that he will confess.

Diferential diagnosis for dissidents and defectors
By Arete-Zoe
This book is a must read for everyone who does not believe in accidental deaths of high-profile enemies of the Russian state, and wants to become more familiar with characteristic signature of KGB murders by poisoning. All presented cases were killings committed by the KGB (or FSB) on direct order of the president. The book presents in detail some of the most ill-famous KGB poisonings abroad.

All cases presented in this book provide detailed description of methods used by the perpetrators to mask the symptoms and make the murder look like natural death. As pointed out, the best murder looks like a heart attack.

Special attention is paid to the two known cases of poisoning by custom-made KGB radioactive weapon in people who lived long enough to tell the tale: the fatal case of polonium 210 poisoning as used in the case of Alexander Litvinenko in October/November 2006, and thallium poisoning as used for Nikolai Khokhlov in September 1957. Khokhlov was a trained assassin and turned himself in when he was sent to kill Russian migr G.S. Okolovich in Frankfurt am Main in 1943. His next operation was conducted under direct supervision of the FBI.

What is interesting about the Khokhlov case is the way he was trained back in the POW camp in order to get a new identity of a fellow prisoner (page 165). In 1957, when Khokhlov got ill with an unknown condition, his life was saved by U.S. Army medical facility which correctly identified the cause as thallium poisoning. This can be compared to the confusion and apparent inability to establish correct diagnosis by British doctors in 2006 in the Litvinenko's case. This time, the Americans did not get involved, as this murder did not formally belong to the jurisdiction of the USA, and Litvinenko never worked for them. Litvinenko's key work includes book "Blowing Up Russia", which documents how FSB is responsible for the series of bombings of the apartment buildings, rather than the Chechen terrorists. Litvinenko's death came just a few weeks after the murder of Anna Politkovskaya. Her poisoning on the flight to Chechnya during the Beslan crisis is briefly discussed as part of the Litvinenko case.

Dioxin used in the poisoning of Ukrainian presidential candidate Victor Yushchenko in September 2004 was a diagnostic and therapeutic challenge as well. Should he stayed in Ukrainian hospital Feofania, his chances of survival would be very slim, because doctors were practically barred from attending the sick man, and those who still attempted to help, were either threatened or fired from their jobs (page 102). Chervonenko, Alexander Tretyakov, and Yushchenko's American-born wife made a quick and sound decision to fly Yushchenko to a private hospital in Vienna, Austria. At that time, the most prominent symptoms were acute pancreatitis, severe inflammation and ulceration of gastrointestinal tract, and atypical skin disease. Doctor Nikolai Korpan, who first came with the theory that his patient was poisoned, had to face tough questioning and his immigration status and professional credentials were seriously challenged. He was right, and the toxicological analysis fully confirmed dioxin poisoning. State Department refused to get involved.

In May 1962, 24-year-old Lt Lapusnyik defected from Hungary to Austria and turned himself in to the Austrian police. He was placed in detention for questioning, and described loopholes in Iron Curtain and provided valuable information about the functioning of the Hungarian Ministry of Interior. In June 1962, he died of a brain hemorrhage. The author's estimate is that the substance to blame was DMS (dimethyl-sulphate). Austrian authorities decided to turn blind eye to this obvious murder. At that time, Austrian security forces were heavily penetrated by Russian and their satellites' agents; and the total number of intelligence officers (declared) in Vienna and Salzburg outnumbered US and UK stations combined.

The death of Soviet Naval officer Nikolai Artamonov (Shadrin/Lark) in 1975 was an accident, as the chloroform used to stuff him in the KGB car was not meant to kill him. He was supposed to be brought to Moscow for questioning. Lark was smuggled over Czech border through one of the loopholes described by Lapusnyik, and died of asphyxiation. This case is interesting for two reasons - the substitute of Colonel Kuryshev 1 who disappeared with Lark over the Czech border, and Kuryshev 2, who continued to serve in Vienna (in other words, identity fraud). Artmanov was closely working with the KGB under American control, and was disposed off on neutral territory.

Another interesting case presented here is assassin Bogdan Stashinsky, who was recruited by the KGB after he got caught on train without a ticket. In 1957, he was ordered to kill Rebet for his work "The Theory of Nations" by poisonous gas (cyanide) shot straight in the victim's face. Three days later, he killed exactly the same way Ukrainian nationalist leader Stephan Bandera. There is an interesting paragraph about kill conditioning on page 185. Stashinsky was tried in court for his crimes, got 8 years, and was resettled in a third country. On Oct 19, 1962, the High Court judge ruled that the Soviet government in Moscow was guilty of all political assassinations. It would be great if this much attention was paid to resettlement of victims.

In Russia, assassinations are still a way how to dispose of politically undesirable migrs and defectors. The book is not an easy read, but it is worth the time. It is thoroughly researched and backed up by solid evidence.

Interesting book - recommended for espionage afacionados
By S. Uehlinger
A good read. Although due to its somewhat "choppy" style, I would recommend it for well-read espionage aficionados - who already know the basic structure of the KGB/FSB, etc. I particularly liked the summary of Putin's ascent to power starting in St Petersburg (toward the back of the book). I also appreciated the chapters on Khokhlov - a fascinating case, altho apparently Brooke-Shepherd's work attributes more to K. - Volodarsky likens him to a mere assistant. I look foward to the author's next work.

Lots of Transformers character designs to check out. Nice.
By Parka
[[VIDEOID:mo3HRE5AIBFKF3W]]Here's the artbook for the CG animated TV series Transformers: Prime. It had three seasons plus a TV film Predacons Rising that was released in October 2013. So this artbook came out in December 2013 which is quite fast.

The 208-page hardcover book is split into three parts covering the characters & prop designs, environment, and finally colour & effects as they are used in the shows.

The highlight of the book is of course the character designs for the Transformers Autobots and Decepticons. They take up half the book. The designs are really cool. There are some similarities with the other shows or movies that ran before it, but it has its own unique artistic style. Perhaps because the characters are to be animated, they appear to be quite organic in design, with more curves going on. You won't mistake them for other robot franchises. Fans will love this section.

There are plenty of characters to look at. And the book's quite big so they are printed big too. There are nice close ups on different body parts, props and relic designs. Transformation sequence art for several characters are included but unfortunately they are printed a bit too small.

The environment background art are beautiful but I felt that many pieces can be quite dark making it difficult to see the details or maybe that's to hide the details. This would be the weak part of the book.

The last part covers the art direction, talking specifically about the colours and effects.

Throughout the book, there are some lengthy and insightful interviews at the end of chapters. They include interviews with David Hartman (supervising director/art director), Jose Lopez (art director/characters & props), Vince Toyama (production designer) and Christopher Vacher (visual effects art director), and also captions accompanying the concept art. Lots to read on the production side of making the animation.

Overall, it's a good book to get if you're fans of the animated series, Transformers or robots in general. My quibble is the dark environment concept art pieces.

A tribute to the other "Team Prime"
By L. W. Swint
"Transformers: The Art of Prime" is a rare book: a hardcover volume detailing the artistic creation of an American animated television series. There have been very few books in this category: Paul Dini and Chip Kidd's classic 1998 book, "Batman: Animated," which showcased the revered "Batman: The Animated Series," is an excellent example. "The Art of Star Wars: The Clone Wars," by Frank Parisi and Gary Scheppke, published in 2009, gave readers an inside look at the ambitious movie and TV continuation of George Lucas' "Star Wars" Saga. Most recently, books have been released featuring the making of the Nikelodeon Channel cartoon creations "Avatar: The Last Airbender ('The Art of the Animated Series,' from 2010)," and "The Legend of Korra ('The Art of the Animated Series: Book One - Air,' published in 2013), both written by Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko. These books offered animation fans enriching looks into the challenging work involved in the making of an animated series for television. "The Art of Prime," written by "Transformers" enthusiast Jim Sorenson, is a beautiful addition to this rather exclusive library of books.

"Transformers: Prime" was a grand reinterpretation of the ongoing "Transformers" mythos, using computer graphic animation. Over three seasons and a direct to video movie finale, "Prime" gave giant robot fans and lovers of animation an exciting adventure cartoon with engaging stories and memorable characters. It also created its own distinctive vision of the decades old war between "the peace loving Autobots" and "the brutal Decepticons." "The Art of Prime" is a lavish showcase of the creation of that vision, brought to animated life by a band of talented people from around the world, an earth-born "Team Prime." The book is divided into three sections: "Character & Prop Design," "Background & Sets," and "Color & Effects." Each of these sections feature chapters displaying page after page of wonderful art reproductions in full color or black and white sketches as well as detailed illustrations of such things as: drawings and multiple views of the Transformer and human characters, background paintings of such show settings as the town of Jasper, Nevada (the home of young characters Jack, Rafael, and Miko), diagrams of "Team Prime's" base in a former nuclear missile compound, and illustrations and schematics of the Decepticon's monstrous and massive starship, the Nemesis. The artwork showcased in "The Art of Prime" is complimented by occasional quotes from the illustrators, expressing their ideas and inspiration for the visuals they imagined. There are also interviews with members of the TV series' creative team, including: David Hartman, Supervising Director/Art Director; Jose Lopez, Art Director/Characters & Props; and Vince Toyama, Production Designer. These interviews provide the reader fascinating insights into the challenging process of producing an animated cartoon. They also reveal the love these artists have for the "Transformers" universe.

This 208 paged tome has a few flaws. A small number of the illustrations are printed too small to fully appreciate them and some of the full color paintings are reproduced too dark. But from the book's title page which features an almost iconic image of the noble Autobot leader Optimus Prime, taken from the episode "One Shall Rise, Part 3," to the stark illustration of the metallic world Cybertron, a two page painting that opened Chapter 5 of this volume, plus much more, "The Art of Prime" is a wonderful return to the saga of the brave robots and humans called "Team Prime."

For fans of the "Transformers: Prime" animated series as well as fans of animation, this book comes very highly recommended.

Long live Optimus Prime and Team Prime!!

Greatness!! beyond its (minor) flaws
By S. Chen
besides the quibble of not having most of the characters in their CGI showcase ver. This tome is AWESOME!!

Showcasing just abt everything from the 'bots to the locales of Cybertron to special effects used. Some are indeed way to dark (unless that's how the original art is) could use some lightening up.

This vol is unwieldy, harder fit into your regular shelves (or if your into protective covering) Think publisher wise could downsize it a little like they have for War on Cybertron art books?

Drain three pointers, slam dunk easily, and sink that buzzer beater from half court with the help of simple science. Your coach, physicist John J. Fontanella, shows how you can improve your game if you take advice from Isaac Newton. As you read, relive some of the great moments in the game―this time with a scientist and diehard basketball fan as your color analyst.

Find out why you ought to put spin on the ball. Get tips on how to improve your free throw and increase your percentage from the charity stripe. You’ll even learn how to shatter the backboard, if that’s something you’ve always dreamed of doing. With photographs and simple high school formulas, physics professor Fontanella―who played in college against Pittsburgh and Syracuse―reveals the key pieces of physics that underscore basketball. He covers almost every aspect of the game, weaving in stories from games he’s played and games he’s seen, and tales from basketball history and folklore. Physics comes alive as you see how Kobe Bryant, Wilt "the Stilt" Chamberlain, Michael Jordan, Becky Hammon, and J. J. Reddick do naturally the things that Isaac Newton says they should.

Forget Newton's apple. It's a basketball that provides the ideal focus for physics. Layups, stuff shots, treys, hang time--the entire wonderful game of hoops yields its kinetic secrets to Fontanella's careful but entertaining application of mathematical science. Whether looking at a Steve Nash bounce pass, a Peja Stojakovich jump shot, or a Gus Johnson slam, Fontanella teases out explanatory formulas and geometry. Sometimes the analyses serve a chiefly theoretical interest: by probing the dynamics of microcracks, for instance, Fontanella explains when and why a backboard will shatter. But as a former college player himself, Fontanella recognizes the value of science that translates into on-court techniques. Anyone who wants to get better at launching treys or shooting free throws will find finely calibrated advice here. Some readers may find the mathematics a bit stiff, but all will relish the piquant anecdotes that accompany the numbers. What fan doesn't enjoy revisiting Michael Jordan's 1982 nothing-but-net game winner against Georgetown? An unusual book, certain to attract both the sports fan and the armchair scientist. We analyze and overanalyze the game from so many different angles that it is hard to find a new one. John Fontanella has done just that, breaking the game down in a very interesting way.

(Brenda Frese, Head Coach, University of Maryland (2006 NCAA Champions))

John Fontanella, whose success as a shooter approached perfection, has applied physics to the everyday world of basketball. It will tremendously enhance the game that he loves. I highly recommend his book for coaches, players, and fans who want an insightful understanding of the science of shooting a basketball.

(Dr. C. Ronald Galbreath, Women’s Basketball Coach, Geneva College)

The Physics of Basketball
By J. Lomax
Make no mistake about it, this is not an introductory book. This is for people who know basketball and a little physics or know physics and a little basketball. It tells basketball stories to illustrate physics and physics stories to illustrate basketball.

I would recommend this book to high school and college physics teachers to add interest to their discussions. It could even be used as text for a college course on physics of sports. Not only does sport interest students, they already know something about 'how it works' and with the help of this book, an instructor can use physics to introduce them to 'why it works'.

I found of the sequence of explanation of the four force model of the flight of the ball exceptionally well done. As with a good scienctist, he started with data. Then he took one force, gravity, explained how it works, what effect it will have on a shot ball and compared the effect to data. He showed how gravity was necessary but insufficient to explain the ball's motion. Through three more forces: buoynacy, drag (air resistance) and Magnus force, he methodically discussed the force, performed measurements, then added the force to the model. Now that he had the four force model, he used it to explain how a good shooter chooses his shot angle to make a shot 'softer' not, as one might expect, easier. Marvelous -- data, theory (or theories), model, prediction, repeat until it matches nature, and finally use the model to explain something not originally in the model. How much more accurate a view of the method of scientist than the "scientific method".

As the motion of the ball gets more complicated, following the physics does get a bit challenging. Through the discussion of deflections off the rim and backboard, I admit I read for a while and then let it sink in before I returned to it. I was however rewarded in discovering how correct I was in trying to use the board when close to the hoop -- only thirty years too late.

As with any good rock concert, one should be left wanting more, and I wished that the discussion of breaking the glass was given a bit more space. I think a figure or two more showing the effect of compression and tension and how this leads to an explosive break would have helped.

Finally, in addition to instructors, this book would be a good read for your scientist friend or science dabbler who would like good basketball stories along with some good stories of scientific inquiry.

understanding brings skill!
By Bryce Jurgensmeier
Would you like some extra motivation to learn the laws of physics? John Fontanella really does the trick for you, with his great analysis of the physics world in the game of basketball! He covers aspects of how to shoot the "soft shot" and how the ball has its best rotation before falling into the hoop. He also covers the aspect of the buoyant force acting on the ball. That was something that really struck my interest, as it is something that I've never really thought about. Reading from this book helped me to appreciate the game of basketball even more. I even feel like I may naturally perform a little better in the future due to the realization of how things work. It makes sense now how the basketball can seem to float more than a solid object in the air, because of the air that is inside it causing a buoyant force from the air to act upon it.
Not only are some of these aspects of the game of basketball taught on, but Fontanella even breaks down the mechanics of how one receives "hang time" when going to slam the ball. He broke down the calculations to where due to the acceleration of gravity, 71% of a person's horizontal travel happens in the top half of flight. Also, because when one throws his or her arms up in the air, there is an opposing force which seems to lower the person's vertical height. If this person will raise his or her arms once he or she barely pushes off the ground, this appearance of being lowered in the air will not really occur. When this individual throws his arms down, especially in attempt to throw the basketball through the hoop, his body will appear to "lift" even though he is currently in the air. Due to all of this, it will appear as if the athlete is truly floating or hanging in air.
I really enjoyed this book. I wish that I had read it earlier as it would have caused an appreciation for the reality of physics. Just as knowing the fundamentals of basketball provide one with essential skills, I feel that understanding the physics that go into this game also increases one's skill. Sure, I'm not a Micheal Jordan athlete yet, but I do know how to better appear as if I'm floating in the air now when I attempt to take the ball to the hoop. Once again, I appreciate physics, and especially this book.

Jackson Pollock's Mural: Energy Made Visible, by David Anfam

An astute, beautifully illustrated examination of the recently restored touchstone of modern art

Jackson Pollock’s major early work Mural (1943) was commissioned by Peggy Guggenheim for the entrance hall of her East 61st Street New York residence. Mural-sized, though not actually a mural―the work is painted on a six-meter-long canvas, not directly onto the wall―this vast, frieze-like panorama would be hugely influential in twentieth-century American art.

In Jackson Pollock's Mural:Energy Made Visible, David Anfam explores the painting and its impact by way of the different themes it incorporates, including the imagery of action and process, the big picture, the “gothic,” the body, dance, and Romanticism, relating them to art historical precedents, Abstract Expressionism, Pollock’s psychology, and the context of American art and culture in the pre- and postwar years. This analysis is accompanied by reproductions of Pollock’s work as well as imagery from the period that sheds light on the artist’s development.

Gifted to the University of Iowa Museum of Art in 1948, Mural has rarely traveled, and it is now the focus of a traveling exhibition curated by Anfam. This accompanying volume offers crucial analysis and historical background on one of Pollock’s most significant works. 106 illustrations, 67 in color

Review
“Vividly bound in neon green.” (Vogue)

“This passionately argued text by Anfam delves into the personal, cultural, and artistic forces that helped shape Pollock's largest and, according to the author, most influential painting. Richly analytical, and with 106 illustrations including pages from Pollock's sketchbooks, the text draws compelling connections between Pollock's work and the paintings of J.M.W. Turner, the writings of Charles Olson, and the biological examinations of human form by D'Arcy Wentworth Thompson. This insightful study is a welcome analysis of a single work by Pollock.” (Publisher's Weekly)

“Excellent.” (Artinfo)

“This handsomely produced book, by one of the most sensitive writers on the New York School of painting, should be on every shelf. . . . Anfam ranges widely throughout Pollock’s career, indicating sources within the critical, artistic, social, and political spheres that were deeply influential to Pollock’s art from his earliest paintings until his death. There are a number of new finds . . . that significantly expand the Pollock scholarship and provide new insights into the form of the painter’s work and its resonance within its contemporary culture. Compellingly written.” (Choice)

“Although a new tranche of recent and forthcoming scholarship is rewriting the story of Mural, David Anfam's vibrant catalogue will almost certainly remain the most assured and sympathetic guide to the painting from conception to legacy. Few interpreters of Abstract Expressionism have Anfam's breadth of cultural knowledge, even fewer his intellectual independence. He avoids theoretical muddle and dead ends. Anfam's prose is as energetic as the painting it elucidates, but both reward close and calm attention.
