Practical data design tips from a data visualization expert of the modern age

Data doesn?t decrease; it is ever-increasing and can be overwhelming to organize in a way that makes sense to its intended audience. Wouldn?t it be wonderful if we could actually visualize data in such a way that we could maximize its potential and tell a story in a clear, concise manner? Thanks to the creative genius of Nathan Yau, we can. With this full-color book, data visualization guru and author Nathan Yau uses step-by-step tutorials to show you how to visualize and tell stories with data. He explains how to gather, parse, and format data and then design high quality graphics that help you explore and present patterns, outliers, and relationships.

  • Presents a unique approach to visualizing and telling stories with data, from a data visualization expert and the creator of flowingdata.com, Nathan Yau
  • Offers step-by-step tutorials and practical design tips for creating statistical graphics, geographical maps, and information design to find meaning in the numbers
  • Details tools that can be used to visualize data-native graphics for the Web, such as ActionScript, Flash libraries, PHP, and JavaScript and tools to design graphics for print, such as R and Illustrator
  • Contains numerous examples and descriptions of patterns and outliers and explains how to show them

Visualize This demonstrates how to explain data visually so that you can present your information in a way that is easy to understand and appealing.

From the Author: Telling Stories with Data
Author Nathan Yau A common mistake in data design is to approach a project with a visual layout before looking at your data. This leads to graphics that lack context and provide little value. Visualize This teaches you a data-first approach. Explore what your data has to say first, and you can design graphics that mean something.

Visualization and data design all come easier with practice, and you can advance your skills with every new dataset and project. To begin though, you need a proper foundation and know what tools are available to you (but not let them bog you down). I wrote Visualize This with that in mind.

You'll be exposed to a variety of software and code and jump right into real-world datasets so that you can learn visualization by doing, and most importantly be able to apply what you learn to your own data.

Three Data Visualization Steps:

1) Ask a Question
(Click Graphic to See Larger Version)
When you get a dataset, it sometimes is a challenge figuring out where to start, especially when it's a large dataset. Approach your data with a simple curiosity or a question that you want answered, and go from there.

2) Explore Your Data
(Click Graphic to See Larger Version)
A simple curiosity often leads to more questions, which are a good guide for what stories to dig into. What variables are related to each other? Can you see changes over time? Are there any features in the data that stand out? Find out all you can about your data, because the more you know what's behind the numbers, the better story you can tell.

3) Visualize Your Data
(Click Graphic to See Larger Version)
Once you know the important parts of your data, you can design graphics the best way you see fit. Use shapes, colors, and sizes that make sense and help tell your story clearly to readers. While the base of your charts and graphs will share many of the same properties – bars, slices, dots, and lines – the final design elements will and should vary by your unique dataset.

Great start
By willkristi
I really enjoyed this book. It is absolutely beautifully printed and the examples are well made and well explained. There are a couple of things I would have liked to see done a little differently.

First, every example uses Adobe Illustrator to make the visualization look as good as they do. In order to complete the exercises, you must have Illustrator. Nathan does explain that it can be obtained at a discount or you can an older version, but it's still a pretty big financial investment. If I hadn't been able to dig up a old copy, Illustrator 9, I would have been out of luck. Even with my outdated copy, not everything worked for me. If he had included at least a couple of examples with the open source Inkscape, this would have been a 5 star rating.

The second thing I would have liked to see a little different is more statistical info to go along with the visualizations. We often visualize data to help make decisions. Nathan shows how to display a LOESS line to see the best fit for the curve, but he stops there. Maybe discussing R ( correlation coefficient) analysis to determine whether the values are are a good match would help me feel better about analyzing the data beyond just visualization.

That said, this is an extremely well written book and easily deserves 4 stars. Dig up an old copy of Illustrator (preferably CSx versions) and enjoy this book.

Diappointingly Vague and Circular
By John Miller
I was really hoping for a book on how to abstract data sets into visualizations, with concrete programming examples. In other words, "ask yourself these questions about the data; with these answers (or those), the data is best visualized in these formats. Now, let's implement".

Instead, I found it to be a kind of "circular" logic (visualize data in good ways is important... here is some data visualized in a good way... now doesn't that show how important it is - and it's cool... btw here is a code snippet). It is almost like the book is just trying to convince me that data visualization can be powerful and cool. I know that - that's why I bought this, I wanted to learn the tools and techniques to determine the best and most innovative way to visualize data sets, not how the author has visualized existing data sets he has dealt with.

Interesting enough to borrow if you see it on a friend's desk, but I don't think I'd purchase it again if I had the opportunity.

Tools usage, not design pricinples
By A Medlin
If you are looking for a book on how to use Illustrator and R to create various visual elements, this book may be for you. It shows you examples using various tools, and is more of a guide to creating charts and other elements using those tools. This book is not for people not interested in using R or Illustrator or Excel for that matter. If you are looking for a book that will outline how you should THINK about presenting data that you have, and give you constructive ideas, this book is not for you. The FlowingData blog has a bunch of great tips for that, so that is what I was expecting. However, when I saw a bunch of screenshots and sample code, this is more of a programming guide than a design book.

In addition, the first chapter in the preview is not representative of the book, IMO.

A more apt title would be "How to use Adobe Illustrator and R to Create Charts".

If you are looking for a 'How To' guide, this might very well be your book. I'm rating it low because I was expecting a book that would give me design principles and guides, not show me code samples and tool screenshots.

Review

From the book reviews:

“This text can serve as a complement to traditional undergraduate programming language course resources or as the main textbook for introductory courses in programming language operational semantics. The book is well organized, flows well, and is pleasant to read. … Summing Up: Recommended. Upper-division undergraduates and faculty.” (D. Papamichail, Choice, Vol. 52 (5), January, 2015)

“There are many things in this book that would lead to its recommendation as a course textbook: it provides a good breadth of material, and a stepping stone from programming experience to more theoretical aspects of programming languages. … it would be an excellent addition to a reference list that could be used to inform a solid understanding of programming language theory.” (Sara Kalvala, Computing Reviews, July, 2014)

From the Back Cover

Providing a concise introduction to the essential concepts in programming languages, using techniques from operational semantics, this book highlights three major programming paradigms:

• Imperative languages: the main features of these languages are illustrated with examples in Java, Python, C;

• Functional languages: modern languages such as ML and Haskell are used to describe the functional style of programming;

• Logic languages: the last part of the book gives an overview of logic programming using Prolog.

Following a general description of each family of languages, their semantics are studied using abstract machines and structural operational semantics. Programming Languages and Operational Semantics gives an in-depth analysis of the basic concepts in programming languages instead of a mere survey of languages, assisting the understanding of the fundamental notions in programming languages over simply describing their properties.

It is addressed to undergraduate students, as a complement to programming courses.

The Neglected Sun: Why the Sun Precludes Climate Catastrophe, by Sebastian Luning, Fritz Vahrenholt

The effect of the sun’s activity on climate change has been either scarcely known or overlooked. In this momentous book – first published in German as Die kalte Sonne in 2012 – Professor Fritz Vahrenholt and Dr. Sebastian Lning demonstrate that the critical cause of global temperature change has been, and continues to be, the sun’s activity. Vahrenholt and Lning reveal that four concurrent solar cycles master Earth’s temperature – a climate reality upon which man’s carbon emissions bear little significance. The sun’s present cooling phase, precisely monitored in this work, renders impossible the catastrophic prospects put forward by the United Nations’ Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change and the alarmist agenda dominant in contemporary Western politics.

An Important Discussion of ALL the Inputs Needed for Climatology Models
By systemguy
(Bias Alert: If being a denier means not blindly accepting the IPCC public results and recommendations at face value, then I am a denier. If it means totally rejecting all climate impacts of CO2 I am not,)

"The Neglected Sun" is a serious discussion of the influences on climate change - many of which are apparently ignored by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) models. It goes into significant detail about natural influences on global warming including: solar effects (solar cycles, visible light, UV, magnetic field), low level cloud cover, water vapor, recurring climate features (ENSO, PDO, NAO), ozone, the ionosphere ,etc. - and CO2. Numerous references are provided for each chapter with embedded callouts. Information is presented fully and in detail. Deficiencies in the IPCC modeling approach and and its public statements are discussed in a way that will be viewed as relatively unbiased by anyone that is not likely to call someone a "denier".

In trying to get a realistic picture of what is coming in the climate change arena, I have read a lot of climatology and oceanography books, both good and bad, alarmist and dismissive, unbiased and political; this is one of the two or three best that I have come across so far. In my opinion, decisions about climate change are too important to be dictated in the political arena by governmental agencies and private interest groups. As this book indicates, we must return to true scientific method in climatology - with research data openly disseminated for review, allowed skepticism, and the ability of all interested scientists to attempt to replicate results in an open forum. This book describes a much wider spectrum of climate modeling inputs than is currently considered in IPCC models.. This review may be criticized by the claim that the predominance of climatologists are well aware of solar and other natural impacts on global warming - and I agree with that. Unfortunately these inputs have apparently been ignored in the heavily-edited models and public statements of the IPCC.

The book is slightly repetitive and not as well organized as it could be. In the Kindle edition there are also many areas of random spaces inserted into words, especially before a final "y".

By ChillyWilly45
This is not an easy read, relatively technical but if you stick with it you get a good sense on the many effects the sun has on our climate. It also explains the lack of those very significant climate effects in the computer models of our climate which are the sole source being used to form very expensive policies to avoid global warming.

Building Plank on Frame Ship Models, by Ron McCarthy

The “plank-on-frame” method is the pre-eminent ship modeling technique, and this practical manual is the foremost guide to its intricacies. Taking as his example the two-masted sloop Cruiser of 1752, the author leads the shipwrights through every stage of building a model of the vessel, from preliminary research and taking off lines to the actual construction of the hull, fittings, masting, and rigging. Each step is illustrated with explanatory line drawings and photographs.

Wonderful book - but not necessarily for the novice
By John S. Reid
Anyone considering this book is obviously experienced in, or interested in, building models of sailing ships. Those who are already experienced in building sailing ship models will likely have the necessary background to appreciate this well-written tome. It is clear and concise in describing a plank-on-frame build of a very modest scale (approx. 14 inch hull length) model of a 1752-era British frigate (the Cruiser). The author presents the build exercise in a very approachable (and not at all intimidating) manner.
However, for those who are not experienced model ship builders, this can still be a very good book, provide you have some background. To wit:
Models of sailing ships consist of essentially three different types: (i) solid hull, in which a solid block of wood is used for the hull; (ii) plank-on-bulkhead (POB), in which the hull is formed from solid wall bulkheads spaced apart along the length of the ship, and the planking is applied over the outer surface of the bulkheads (and most suppliers of wooden model kits provide this type of construction); and (iii) plank-on-frame (POF) construction, wherein the hull is formed from "U" and/or "V" shaped "frames" that are spaced apart along the length of the ship, and the planking is applied over both the outer and inner surfaces of the frames. POF construction is nearest to the "real thing". Pretty much POF construction of a ship model is for the purist, since a fully planked POF model is nearly indistinguishable in external appearance from a POB model. But if your goal is not just to build a ship model, but to replicate the original build experience (in scale), then POF building is the way to go. That said, this book is a "must read" for any ship modeler wanting to get into POF model ship building. HOWEVER: the author does assume some familiarity on the part of the reader with wooden sailing ship construction and ship terms. To that end, for the novice I highly recommend supplementing this book with the following books (as regards hull construction - rigging is a whole different subject): (i) Building the Wooden Fighting Ship (by James Moore); and (ii) A Sea Of Words (by Dean King). The former text is a description of how wooden sailing ships were actually built - an essential understanding for any model ship builder regardless of the type of model construction you wish to undertake. (And I would recommend reading this book first.) The latter text is a lexicon of ship terms you will need to know in order to appreciate Building Plank on Frame Ship Models, and indeed any model ship building exercise.
Regarding the author (Ron McCarthy), he built ship models professionally for 56 years, so he knows what he's talking about.
So, if you are an experienced model shipbuilder wanting to move from POB to POF construction, this is a great book by itself. But if you are a novice model shipbuilder wanting to gain a fuller understanding of the building of sailing ships (and models thereof), this book (while still a great read) will need to be supplemented with some additional reading in order for you to fully appreciate the book. In any event, for the dedicated builder of model sailing ships, this book is an essential tome to add to your library.

Building Plank on Frame Ship Models
By Wayland Lee
This is an excellent book. However, this is for advanced model builders with experience building from scratch, not from a kit. This book is not for the beginner. Excellent drawings and photos describing the author's methods and techniques.
