Part Four considers the role of multidisciplinary pain management teams, their organization, their place within different health care systems, and how best to manage change when implementing such a service.


Part Five concludes the volume, investigating the use of guidelines, standards and quality improvement initiatives in the management of post-operative pain, and discussing the expert medicolegal report.

He provides a glimpse of the mystic rites that used to take place in Ancient Egypt for people who had the desire and strength to become initiates in those times.

A great follow-up book!!

Alex's new life continues right where it was left off in the previous book, A Growing Lad. From the start, Alex takes us into what his life has been like since he moved to the farm to work for the summer. He tells us what he has been doing, the new friends he has made and how his life has changed. His voice is one of a matured young man who has had to grow up fast but who is happy with where he is at the moment, both physically and mentally.

From a shy, socially awkward teenager, Alex has grown to be a matured young man who has made strides in his social interactions and who has learned a great deal about himself and others through the process. He continues his new-found relationship with Ryan and he continues to form friendship bonds with Farley and Bob.

With Alex's introspective narration and a set of interesting events that complemented the plot, the writing was as great as I expected. I was absorbed in the story and its characters, especially the developing relationship between Alex and Ryan - they were adorable. I enjoyed how U.M. Lassiter brought these two together. Their interactions were entertaining and their relationship an enjoyable addition to the story. It was great to see how far Alex had gotten. He was more confident with how he carried himself and continued to accept his situation even if at times he felt flustered with the attention he attracted and what was expected of him because of his size.

The author managed to give us a great storyline while at the same time giving us a glimpse into the new life Alex is embarking. I enjoyed the way he went about dealing with Alex's doubts towards Bob's intentions, Alex's interactions with the others characters and the resolution of the plot. As I kept reading I had my doubts about how U.M. Lassiter would bring it all together in the end, but he manage to do it in a way that felt real and not over the top, which I appreciated.

All in all, Small Farm Big Farm Boy is a great addition to the Growing Pains series. I would like to read more about Alex's story. I am curious to read more about his continued growth as a person and the new life and relationships he has established.

too silly

I received this book as an ARC through NetGalley. My thanks to the publisher, author, and Net Galley for letting me read this.

The plot was more than a bit absurd, but could have worked on a smaller scale. I think having him end up being 7ft tall and 600 pounds was just too much. Alex seemed like a good kid, more than a bit naive, but basically a good, if simple, person. I wish I could say something about Ryan, but I got no feeling for his character what so ever. I wouldn't have known they were dating if Alex hadn't said so, and they hadn't fooled around a bit. I have no idea why they were together, or what kept the relationship going. The plot made me want to bang their heads together. Ok, I can see Alex might not have understood what was going on, but that Ryan just went along with everything made me think that he was an idiot. The writing style felt a bit clunky, and didn't help the plot or characters.

From reading the description
"Just because you're large, doesn't mean you want to be in charge." and seeing the cover and the fact extasy books published it, I started it thinking it would be erotica, or at least slightly but it wasn't.

The characters were OK but the plot wasn't really for me. I didn't connect with the characters and it didn't flow very well as well as it could have

Straight from the heart. I could feel it

Reading this book I felt I was having a coffee get-together with a great teacher and a wonderful person. The book starts of with the poem that went viral and it's followed by close to thirty small essays where the teacher zips in and out of various topics. We hear a justified outrage towards society for "being judged by the size of our paycheck instead of by the difference we make"; personal anecdotes from the author's teaching experience from different parts of the world; tips, learning experiences and pointers that helps in the "art of explanation"; emotions and tears while making calls to the student's parents; introductions to the author's mentors and more. Towards the end, the teacher also counters the criticism levelled at teachers saying that ineffective teachers shouldn't be seen as representative of teachers everywhere and that the accusations of greed just doesn't hold up if you look at the numbers. The book touches upon some of the educational policy issues but the focus in on the author's personal experience. So it's not a detailed look or analysis of the points one see in the recent discussions regarding education policy: classroom size, publicizing the performance data etc.

Yes, good teachers certainly need to be reminded that "they're dearly loved" and I'm only glad to support Teacher Mali and his 'thousand teacher' cause. Plus one star for reminding me that it's been a while since I paid visit to some of my teachers back from the school days.

Perfect for the Teacher You Know, or Are

I first came across Taylor Mali while completing my teaching degree and researching poetry for a class I had to teach in the morning. Honestly, teaching poetry to a bunch of teenagers wasn't high on my excitement list (probably due in large measure to having to read, and re-read Coleridge's poem in high school, or all that guff about Grecian Vases!) and I was hoping to come across something that would inspire my students to find poetry exciting. What I found instead was my own inspiration: for continuing doing what I was doing (ironically teaching was a career change for me from law!), and inspiring my students to enjoy poetry by getting them to perform their own poems so that the words could live for everyone.

'What Teachers Make' should be something you find slipped into your hands as you walk across the stage with your testamur in hand. One thing says you're now qualified...the other provides some sanity to keep going for those times you think you're drowning or worse still watching a kid drown and failing to reach them in time. By providing the reader with insight into his years as a teacher, Mali is providing the newly qualified teacher something invaluable: a transportable mentor. All newly qualified teachers need the kind words of more experienced teachers to help us fill up our grab bag of tricks in dealing with our classes, and Taylor Mali does that...but then provides so much more. In sharing his experiences as a class room teacher with newly qualified teachers - and those more experienced teachers who are honest with themselves (because after all, we're all afraid of drowning at times) Taylor Mali provides the reader with the opportunity to take a deep breath, perhaps have a laugh or remember a break through moment and relax. As in the poem 'Like Lily Like Wilson' often times those wonderful moments of teaching have the tendency to sneak up on you when you least expect them, and Taylor Mali's book reminds us of that.

I am supposed to love this book (I think)

As a teacher, I am supposed to love this book (I think). I did enjoy reading it, however, I found myself disagreeing with Mali on more than one occasion, which is why I give it three stars. However, I am glad I read it and had the opportunity to disagree and counter Mali's ideas as I read it, and think I am a better teacher for it!

`Beating Overeating is an awesome book. Concrete and do-able, it's ground-breaking advice. Makes me feel I don't need to fall out of love with food, or disconnect myself from it, rather that I can turn my passion from a negative to a positive one. Really exciting stuff. I have spent so much of my life with my head in the sand because I thought nothing would ever work. Having read your book Eating Less, I think this more condensed format actually gives the message a lot more punch. I feel energised and able after reading this. The ease of the read somehow syncs with ease of attitude I'm searching for. This is more compelling than ever.'

Simple and Insightful Book for Overeaters/Binge-Eaters--and if you want to Kindle it, see DITCHING DIETS

Your brain is the key. Your choice is essential. Habits can be changed.

Any person trying to lose weight, especially those of us from a frenzied/over-/binge-eating status, knows the brain is where the battle really is. Willpower. We choose. We are not defenseless in the face of temptation. We can learn to fight the primitive drives.

I bought this paperback a year ago--but I had bought EATING LESS in 2010-- but if you prefer to e-read it, you should know it's available as a Kindle book in the updated version retitled DITCHING DIETS. (Just learned that reading the newsletter today.)

I've lost 115 pounds and my journey required I learn a lot about what drove me and what occasionally still wants to drive me to food. Gillian's works have helped me have a better understanding and mindset. I have not binged since May 2010, and I subscribe to Gillian's newsletter (you can too, just go to her website at Eating less dot come). Lots of resources have helped and are helping me in this journey. This was one.

TRULY EXCELLENT INFORMATION FOR OVEREATERS

This book is completely different from any other book I've ever read on the subject of controlling eating - and I've read them all! I say this because no matter what dietary advice you want to follow, this method applies. I highly recommend this book if you want to follow any diet, but this book can stand very well on its own.
I'm completely impressed with this whole book and how it's been written, the way the material has been presented, especially the chapter about the brain. Gillian Riley doesn't just make statements and then move on, each statement is explained thoroughly and totally backed up, so that it's perfectly clear, just in case somebody reading it isn't sure.
I already knew maybe one thing contained in the chapter on the brain, but there was a lot of new information in there that was very helpful because it explains the dynamics of how things are actually working, gives you such an understanding of what's really going on. So it's like, if someone was afraid of flying it might help them to understand something about how a plane actually works.
I could really connect to the description of what happens in the more primitive part of the brain and when I have those feelings of being driven to overeat that come from that part of the brain. It really does make sense to me, it explains very well how I feel, because it does feel quite primitive when I'm wanting to eat from that kind of place, as if it's a survival drive.
I believe that food addiction is 99 per cent, if not 100 per cent, in the brain, and Beating Overeating deals way more with that than any other book. So it can make you understand and give you tools to use for whatever nutrition advice you want to follow. The other books tell you what foods to eat, but this book is almost like a completely different subject. I highly recommend it. I promise you'll enjoy the new ideas.

Great for quick meals! My new go-to raw book.

I have been a fan of Doug McNish since I stumbled upon his recipes on Blisstree last year. I made his sour cream and onion kale chips and his pumpkin pie. Both were simple and delicious. When I heard he had a whole book out, I had to get it immediately! So far I have only tried a few things - you can see I added my photo of the banana bread with cashew whipped cream. It was FANTASTIC! I also made cashew spinach dip, packed with a whole head of fresh spinach, lots of lemon juice and black pepper and cheesy nutritional yeast. I ate it for dinner with carrot sticks and celery sticks and it was so filling I took the other half for lunch - and I halved the recipe to begin with. If you are just cooking for yourself, I would cut some of the recipes in half if you don't think you'll want to eat more than one set of leftovers. His recipes are really flexible and seem to come out delicious no matter what you do! I have read all the raw books - we know who the "main" people are in this world - and their recipes just don't come out right all the time. Someone can be a great chef without creating great adaptable recipes. Thankfully, Doug is both! I can't say enough good things about this book, just buy it, trust me! Or, if you want to try it out, request it at your local library - mine is ordering a copy already.

Recipes look/sound better than they taste

After trying several of the recipes in this book during the past week, I decided to check this site to see others' opinions (I had forgotten). Based on my results (disappointing), I was shocked at the 5-Star rating. The recipes I've tried seem flawed. In my opinion, they would require significant modifications in order to (maybe) make them worth trying again. My first attempt was the Cheesy Nori Snacks. There is no way 1/4 cup of Cashew Cheddar Cheese will produce a 1-inch layer on a sheet of nori -- surely a misprint. And, how long would it take a layer that thick to dehydrate? Long enough to go bad, I'm sure! The Walnut Portobello Burgers were tasty, but way too salty with both tamari and salt. I'm currently dehydrating the Thai-Style Nuts 'n' Bolts, and can already tell that there is too much sauce for the quantity of nuts, and that once dehydrated, it will taste too strong. There is also an error in this recipe, which omits what to do with the cumin and chili powder in the instructions. The Green Coconut Curried Vegetables also contain too much sauce for the quantity of vegetables. I reduced the water from 3/4 cup to about 2T, realizing it would be more like a soup than a "main event". Again, too much salt -- 2 tsp for 2 1/2 cups of fresh vegetables??? I reduced it to 1/2 tsp. The Mega-Green Hemp Bowl was actually pretty good, once the salt was reduced. But, we tried it with the Spicy Miso Dressing, and found the flavour too strong. Perhaps I've just made poor choices in which recipes to try. There is nothing subtle about the flavour of this food. And, if eating raw/vegan/gluten-free is supposed to be healthy, why so much salt? So far, I much prefer the recipes in "I Am Grateful -- Recipes & Lifestyle of Cafe Gratitude".

LOVE THIS BOOK!

I have to say that this is the best Raw Food Book I own!
I bought one for my daughter too and she loves it.
The recipes are simple, the ingredients are easy to find and the ones I have tried taste amazing - Chocolate Walnut Brownies are to die for.
I love the specific Tips he gives for each recipe, so helpful!
You will not be disappointed.
