An ideal "essentials" text for introductory courses, The Sociology of Gender, Fourth Edition, provides a concise--yet also in-depth--overview of basic sociological concepts and perspectives on gender. Focusing primarily on the contemporary U.S., Laura Kramer and new coauthor Ann Beutel integrate history, theory, and research in order to examine the current gender system and the ways in which macro-, middle-, and micro-level societal forces have changed that system over time. In addition, this book's explicitly sociological approach provides an alternative to--and critiques of--prevailing biological and psychological approaches to gender and sexual orientation.

Review

"The writing style of The Sociology of Gender is accessible to college students, and it is very comprehensive, especially for a text intended to be a brief introduction."--Kristyan Kouri, California State University, Northridge

"The authors do an excellent job of explaining the sociological approach, including how it differs from both commonsense assumptions and other disciplinary approaches."--Sarah Winslow, Clemson University

"One of the main strengths of this text is its comprehensive yet brief coverage of a very complex subject. It does an excellent job of including both women and men in the discussion, and the incorporation of race, ethnicity, social class, and sexual orientation in each chapter is a significant strength."--Lyn Huxford, McKendree College

Powerful, passionate, and compelling
By Howard Aldrich
In this book aimed mainly at undergraduates, Laura Kramer writes with compassion & understanding about the sociology of gender. Although she favors a multiracial feminist perspective, she sympathetically reviews other leading perspectives on gender, including radical, socialist, postmodernist, and liberal feminism. For each issue she addresses, she shows how other perspectives shed light on a different piece of the puzzle.
A great strength of the book is Kramer's historical perspective on gender issues. She notes that we are now in the "third wave" of feminist activism, and she shows how definitions of "problems" and "solutions" have changed over the past 100 years. "Femininity" and "masculinity" are not fixed categories but rather have evolved as American culture and social structure have changed. Underlying much of her analysis is the assumption that economic forces, especially changing employment opportunities, account for a great deal of the change in gender ideology and politics.
Students will find the 5 page glossary of key terms and the 16 page references section invaluable for further research. Each chapter ends with 3 discussion questions. Non-students will learn much from Kramer's lucid explanations and detailed examples. She cares deeply about the issues in this book, and it shows.

Good Textbook
By Regis
This is my Sociology of Gender Textbook. It is nice and easy to read. The only disappointment with this book is that it doesn't define the words off to the side, but in the actual text. Thankfully, there is a glossary.

With time at a premium, today’s clinicians must rapidly engage their patients while gathering an imposingly large amount of critical information. These clinicians appropriately worry that the "person" beneath the diagnoses will be lost in the shuffle of time constraints, data gathering, and the creation of the electronic health record. Psychiatric Interviewing: The Art of Understanding: A Practical Guide for Psychiatrists, Psychologists, Counselors, Social Workers, Nurses, and other Mental Health Professionals, 3rd Edition tackles these problems head-on, providing flexible and practical solutions for gathering critical information while always attending to the concerns and unique needs of the patient.

Over five years in the making, this classic introduction to the art of clinical interviewing returns, updated, expanded and innovatively designed for today’s reader with over7.5 hours of streaming video integrated directly into the text itself. Readers now also become viewers, acquiring the rare opportunity to see the author both illustrating specific interviewing techniques and subsequently discussing effective ways in which to employ them. The founder and Director of the acclaimed Cape Cod Symposium, Rob Guerette, describes Dr. Shea’s skills as a speaker as follows, "Dr. Shea is an extremely gifted teacher, whose vibrant story-telling skills and compelling videos have led to him garnering some of the highest evaluations in the 30 year history of the Cape Cod Symposium. In short, readers are in for a rare treat when viewing the book's video component."

Within the text, Dr. Shea deftly integrates interviewing techniques from a variety of professional disciplines from psychiatry to clinical psychology, social work, and counseling providing a broad scope of theoretical foundation. Written in the same refreshing, informal writing style that made the first two editions best sellers, the text provides a compelling introduction to all of the core interviewing skills from conveying empathy, effectively utilizing open-ended questions, and forging a powerful therapeutic alliance to sensitively structuring the interview while understanding nonverbal communication at a sophisticated level. Updated to the DSM-5, the text also illustrates how to arrive at a differential diagnosis in a humanistic, caring fashion with the patient treated as a person, not just another case.

Whether the reader is a psychiatric resident or a graduate student in clinical psychology, social work, counseling or psychiatric nursing, the updated third edition is designed to prepare the trainee to function effectively in the hectic worlds of community mental health centers, inpatient units, emergency rooms, and university counseling centers. To do so, the pages are filled with sample questions and examples of interviewing dialogue that bring to life methods for sensitively exploring difficult topics such as domestic violence, drug abuse, incest, antisocial behavior, and taking a sexual history as well as performing complex processes such as the mental status. The expanded chapter on suicide assessment includes an introduction to the internationally acclaimed interviewing strategy for uncovering suicidal ideation, the Chronological Assessment of Suicide Events (CASE Approach). Dr. Shea, the creator of the CASE Approach, then illustrates its techniques in a compelling video demonstrating its effective use in an interview involving a complex presentation of suicidal planning and intent

.A key aspect of this text is its unique appeal to both novice and experienced clinicians. It is designed to grow with the reader as they progress through their graduate training, while providing a reference that the reader will pull off the shelf many times in their subsequent career as a mental health professional. Perhaps the most unique aspect in this regard is the addition of five complete chapters on Advanced and Specialized Interviewing (which comprise Part IV of the book) which appear as bonus chapters in the accompanying e-book without any additional cost to the reader. With over310 pages, this web-based bonus section provides the reader with essentially two books for the price of one, acquiring not only the expanded core textbook but a set of independent monographs on specialized skill sets that the reader and/or faculty can add to their curriculum as they deem fit.

The Positive Trait Thesaurus: A Writer's Guide to Character Attributes (Writers Helping Writers), by Angela Ackerman, Becca Puglisi

It's a writer's job to create compelling characters who can withstand life's fallout without giving up. But building authentic, memorable heroes is no easy task. To forge realistic characters, we must hobble them with flaws that set them back while giving them positive attributes to help them achieve their goals. So how do writers choose the right blend of strengths for their characters--attributes that will render them admirable and worth rooting for--without making it too easy for them to succeed?
Character creation can be hard, but it's about to get a lot easier.

Inside The Positive Trait Thesaurus, you'll find:

    * A large selection of attributes to choose from when building a personality profile. Each entry lists possible causes for why a trait might emerge, along with associated attitudes, behaviors, thoughts, and emotions

    * Real character examples from literature, film, or television to show how an attribute drives actions and decisions, influences goals, and steers relationships

    * Advice on using positive traits to immediately hook readers while avoiding common personality pitfalls

    * Insight on human needs and morality, and how each determines the strengths that emerge in heroes and villains alike

    * Information on the key role positive attributes play within the character arc, and how they're vital to overcoming fatal flaws and achieving success

    * Downloadable tools for organizing a character's attributes and providing a deeper understanding of his past, his needs, and the emotional wounds he must overcome

If you find character creation difficult or worry that your cast members all seem the same, The Positive Trait Thesaurus is brimming with ideas to help you develop one-of-a-kind, dynamic characters that readers will love. Extensively indexed, with entries written in a user-friendly list format, this brainstorming resource is perfect for any character creation project.

    A Must-Have Resource
    By Lisanne Harrington
As a writer myself, I have four resource books on my desk at all times, and this is one of them, along with The Negative Trait Thesaurus, The Emotion Thesaurus and Webster's Dictionary. As a writer, this is a must-have. It is well thought out, comprehensive and perhaps best of all, easy to use. Unlike a typical thesaurus, there's no going back and forth from one entry to another similar entry to another and another. Everything you need is right there.

Plus there are articles about how to create characters readers will connect with, how needs and morals influence a character, what a positive trait is and how it develops.

Writers, you NEED this book. Readers, you will also benefit from reading this book-it will help you recognize great writing from the not-so-great. I highly recommend it.

    Don't List, Describe.........
    By Donald Hunt
A writers aid to character attributes, whether you are, plot driven, or a character driven
writer, the people in your stories must come across as real, or your readers will not not
    relate to them.
It is difficult to like and root for, or dislike a character, that has nothing to them but their name.
Readers want to know, why and what, makes the bad guy like he is, and why is the heroine different.
90+ positive traits are covered, and discussed, covering almost everything you will need to make your
    characters real as life.
You will find an, Achievement, Identity, Interactive and Moral breakdown chart, to help you create each of
    the people in your stories.
Don't just list your characters traits, describe them.

ONLY 5 STARS BECAUSE AMAZON WON'T LET ME GIVE MORE ...
    By Lynn
Every writer needs both the Positive Trait Thesaurus and the Negative Trait Thesaurus. They go together. Add in the Emotion Thesaurus and the great downloads and extras these talented writers give you on their website (which add up to another fabulous book on their own) and you probably won't need too many other books on the craft of writing. A good dictionary and a Synonym finder and you are all set.

I have bought all three "Thesauruses" and loved them so much I bought all three for my Kindle too so I can have them on the move and when travelling. These Thesauruses are exceptionally well organised and contain huge amounts of information in a concise and practical format.

You could just leap in and pick a handful of traits to apply to your character(s) and they would still be better off than when you started. However, taking the time to read through the "users guide" chapters will add so much to your understanding of how to craft truly memorable characters that it is well worth the time invested to do this. Then use the listings to pick and choose traits and counter-traits and the ways in which they would possibly be exhibited to start building a team of people that will resonate with readers. Also use the listings to develop conflict between characters in a psychological way by giving each person traits that would "irritate" or "confuse" the other - much more subtle than the standard good guy VS bad guy.

I can't rate these books highly enough. I know I'm going to be buying them again every couple of years as they become tatty and worn out with daily use!

    Review

“Covering all of the major developmental topics from cradle to grave, they take the reader through the labyrinth of lives that work and play and, unfortunately, fight through occasional major crises and the vexing problems of growing up. The style and tone of the book is genuinely comfortable. Reading it is like having a friendly dialogue with gentle and caring friends.”

From the Forward by Walter J. Lonner

    Western Washington University

“To our knowledge this book has no competition, and is unique … It is unusual for a book to change a curriculum, but rather than being written to fill a demand for classes in cross-cultural human development, it appears that these courses are being created at various universities because Gardiner and Kozmitzki published this text … As Lonner writes in the foreword, the field is changing quickly and significantly, and LAC is in great hands as Gardiner and Kosmitzki reflect this change in each new edition.”

David W. Shwalb and Barbara J. Shwalb

    Southeastern Louisiana University

    From the Back Cover

I just got this book from the publisher and have decided to use it for my cross-cultural development class. No other book that I have found does an even remotely adequate job of combining cross-cultural research and human development. Teaching this class should be a lot easier.

    #1 International Best Seller

In this electrifying new thriller from the author of Police and The Snowman, Inspector Harry Hole hunts down a serial murderer who targets his victims . . . on Tinder.

The murder victim, a self-declared Tinder addict. The one solid clue—fragments of rust and paint in her wounds—leaves the investigating team baffled.
Two days later, there’s a second murder: a woman of the same age, a Tinder user, an eerily similar scene.
The chief of police knows there’s only one man for this case. But Harry Hole is no longer with the force. He promised the woman he loves, and he promised himself, that he’d never go back: not after his last case, which put the people closest to him in grave danger.
But there’s something about these murders that catches his attention, something in the details that the investigators have missed. For Harry, it’s like hearing “the voice of a man he was trying not to remember.” Now, despite his promises, despite everything he risks, Harry throws himself back into the hunt for a figure who haunts him, the monster who got away.

    Praise for The Thirst:

"[Nesbø is] the reigning king of Scandinavian crime fiction . . . [The Thirst is] a big-boned, Technicolor epic . . . starting adagio and ending accelerando, but with the kind of close psychological character readings that distinguished his early work."
    —Barry Forshaw, The Guardian (London)

    "Fast moving . . . stunning."
    —Joan Smith, The Times (London)

“Exceptional . . . Nesbø depicts a heartbreakingly conflicted Harry, who both wants to forget the horrors he’s trying to prevent and knows he has to remember them in all their grim detail.”

"A gripping, way-scary crime novel. . . . This one will keep readers awake deep into the night."
    —Bill Ott, Booklist (starred review)

“Explosive . . . twists within twists within twists . . . yet more evidence of why Scandinavian crime writers continue to dominate international bestseller lists.”
    —Kirkus Reviews

Praise for the work of Jo Nesbø:

“Nesbø writes like an angel. As in Lucifer.”
    —The Philadelphia Inquirer

“Nesbø explores the darkest criminal minds with grim delight and puts his killers where you least expect to find them. . . . His novels are maddeningly addictive.”
    —Vanity Fair

“Jo Nesbø is my new favorite thriller writer and Harry Hole is my new hero.”
    —Michael Connelly

“Nesbø . . . is a giant of the Scandinavian mystery.”

“Crime fiction’s most tortured and compelling hero. Alas, no armor exists strong enough to keep Harry from his demons, or the rest of us from Harry.”
    —Booklist (starred review)

“Nesbø’s books have a serious, socially significant heft, as well as a confident (even cocky) narrative stride that is unmatched. These aren’t mere investigatory trifles to be enjoyed and forgotten; their unnerving horrors linger.”
    —Richmond Times-Dispatch

“In the crowded field of Scandinavian crime fiction, Nesbø’s books stand out. . . . Nesbø likes to rip plots up . . . to play with the conventions of his genre.”
    —The New Yorker

“Harry Hole is fast becoming one of the planet’s favorite detectives. And his demons are almost as legendary as his observational and analytical skills.”

    Prologue

He stared into the white nothingness.

The way he had done for almost three years.

No one saw him, and he saw no one. Apart from each time the door opened and enough steam was sucked out for him to be able to glimpse a naked man for a brief moment before the door closed and everything was shrouded in fog.

The baths would be closing soon. He was alone.

He wrapped the white towelling bathrobe more tightly around him, got up from the wooden bench and walked out, past the empty swimming pool and into the changing room.

No trickling showers, no conversations in Turkish, no bare feet padding across the tiled floor. He looked at himself in the mirror. Ran a finger along the scar that was still visible after the last operation. It had taken him time to get used to his new face. His finger carried on down his throat, across his chest, and came to a halt at the start of the tattoo.

He removed the padlock from his locker, pulled on his trousers and put his coat on over the still damp bathrobe. Tied his shoelaces. He made sure he was definitely alone before going over to a locker with a coded padlock, one with a splash of blue paint on it. He turned the lock until it read 0999. Removed the lock and opened the door. Took a moment to admire the big, beautiful revolver that lay inside before taking hold of the red hilt and putting it in his coat pocket. Then he removed the envelope and opened it. A key. An address, and some more detailed information.

There was one more thing in the locker.

    Painted black, made of iron.

He held it up against the light with one hand, looking at the wrought ironwork with fascination.

He would have to clean it, scrub it, but he already felt aroused at the thought of using it.

Three years. Three years in a white nothingness, in a desert of empty days.

Now it was time. Time he drank from the well of life again.

    Time he returned.

Harry woke with a start. Stared out at the semi-darkness of the bedroom. It was him again, he was back, he was here.

“Nightmare, darling?” The whispered voice by his side was warm and soothing.

He turned towards her. Her brown eyes studied his. And the apparition faded and disappeared.

    “I’m here,” Rakel said.

“And here I am,” he said.

    “Who was it this time?”

“No one,” he lied, and touched her cheek. “Go back to sleep.”

Harry closed his eyes. Waited until he was sure she had closed hers before opening his again. He studied her face. He had seen him in a forest this time. Moorland, wreathed in white fog that swirled around them. He had raised his hand and pointed something towards Harry. He could just make out the demonic, tattooed face on his naked chest. Then the fog had grown thicker, and he was gone. Gone again.

“And here I am,” Harry Hole whispered.

    Chapter One

Elise walked down Thorvald Meyers gate, past plain four-storey buildings that had once housed the working classes in a poor part of a poor city, but where one square metre now cost as much as in London or Stockholm. September in Oslo. The darkness was back at last, and the drawn-out, annoyingly light summer nights were long gone, with all the hysterical, cheerful, stupid self-expression of summer. In September Oslo reverted to its true self: melancholic, reserved, efficient. A solid facade, but not without its dark corners and secrets. Much like her, apparently. She quickened her pace; there was rain in the air, mist, the spray when God sneezed, as one of her dates had put it in an attempt to be poetic. She was going to give up Tinder. Tomorrow. Enough was enough. Enough randy men whose way of looking at her made her feel like a whore when she met them in bars. Enough crazy psychopaths and stalkers who stuck like mud, sucking time, energy and security from her. Enough pathetic losers who made her feel like she was one of them.

They said Internet dating was the cool way to meet new people, that it was nothing to be ashamed of anymore, that everyone was doing it. But that wasn’t true. People met each other at work, in classrooms, through friends, at the gym, in cafes, on planes, buses, trains. They met each other the way they were supposed to meet each other, when they were relaxed, no pressure, and afterwards they could cling to the romantic illusion of innocence, purity and quirks of fate. She wanted that illusion. She was going to delete her profile. She’d told herself that before, but this time it was definitely going to happen, that very night.

She crossed Sofienberggata and fished out the key to unlock the gate next to the greengrocer’s. She pushed the gate open and stepped into the darkness of the archway. And stopped dead.

    There were two of them.

It took a moment or two for her eyes to get used to the darkness, and for her to see what they were holding in their hands. Both men had undone their trousers and had their cocks out.

She jerked back. Didn’t look round, just prayed that there was no one standing behind her.

“Fucksorry.” The combination of oath and apology was uttered by a young voice. Nineteen, twenty, Elise guessed. Not sober.

“Duh,” the other one said, “you’re pissing all over my shoes!”

    “I was startled!”

Elise pulled her coat more tightly around her and walked past the young men, who had turned back to face the wall again. “This isn’t a public toilet,” she said.

“Sorry, we were desperate. It won’t happen again.”

    Ping.

    A match on Tinder.

The triumphant sound your phone makes when someone you’ve already swiped right on swipes your picture right as well.

Elise’s head was spinning, her heart was racing.

She knew it was the familiar response to the sound of Tinder’s matchmaking: increased heart rate as a consequence of excitement. That it released a whole load of happy chemicals that you could become addicted to. But that wasn’t why her heart was galloping. It was because the ping hadn’t come from her phone.

But the ping had rung out at the very moment she’d swiped right on a picture. The picture of a person who, according to Tinder, was less than a kilometre away from her.

She stared at the closed bedroom door. Swallowed.

The sound must have come from one of the neighbouring apartments. There were lots of single people living in the block, lots of potential Tinder users. And everything was quiet now, even on the floor below where the girls had been having a party when she went out earlier that evening. But there was only one way to get rid of imaginary monsters. By checking.

Elise got up from the sofa and walked the four steps over to the bedroom door. Hesitated. A couple of assault cases from work swirled through her head.

Then she pulled herself together and opened the door.

She found herself standing in the doorway gasping for air. Because there wasn’t any. None that she could breathe.

The light above the bed was switched on, and the first thing she saw was the soles of a pair of cowboy boots sticking off the end of the bed. Jeans and a pair of long legs, crossed. The man lying there was like the photograph, half in darkness, half out of focus. But he had unbuttoned his shirt to reveal his bare chest. And on his chest was a drawing or a tattoo of a face. That was what caught her eye now. The silently screaming face. As if it were held tight and was trying to pull free. Elise couldn’t bring herself to scream either.

Excellent read. Harry Hole fans will be happy.
    By Amazon Customer
Really enjoyed this book. Hard to put down and take a break. Full of twists and turns. A big cast of characters with some very interesting criminals. Harry is now a criminal lecturer but gets called back - one last time? - for a particularly nasty and seemingly crafty serial murderer.

Lots of back stabbing politicians, self serving police executives, and assorted women to make life extra miserable for Harry. In other words ... situation normal!!

    Never disappoints

Always a very good story line, full of action and twists. A loose end I would have liked answered but that's for the next book.

A meaty, enjoyable read by an experienced, proven author
    By RLynne
Joram Darkstone is a singer and musician with the band, Invocation. Unfortunately, her adoptive guardian and patron is still trying to control her life. Naomi Kostopoulos grew up in the Carpathian Mountains where she was trained in magic and martial arts and given the task of guarding the dimensional door which keeps fey folk and magic out of our world. When Joram and Naomi meet, the sparks between them are almost visible to the naked eye.
At 287 pages, author, Redhawk, has plenty of room to thoroughly develop her characters and her plot. Darkstone is a very enjoyable read, and introduces many new ideas and concepts, as well as a very scary villain.
