About the Author
Donald Hyndman is an emeritus professor in the Department of Geology at the University of Montana, where he has taught courses in natural hazards, regional geology, igneous and metamorphic petrology, volcanology, and advanced igneous petrology. He continues to lecture on natural hazards. Donald is co-originator and coauthor of six books in the Roadside Geology series and one on the geology of the Pacific Northwest, and he has also written a textbook on Igneous Petrology. His B.S. in Geological Engineering is from the University of British Columbia, and his Ph.D. in Geology is from the University of California Berkeley. He has received the Distinguished Teaching Award and the Distinguished Scholar Award, both given by the University of Montana.

David Hyndman is Donald's son, and a young star in the geological sciences. He is a full professor at Michigan State University, after earning his PhD from Stanford University in 1995. In 2002 he received the Darcy Distinguished Lecturer award, the top award that a hydrogeologist may receive in his or her field. He has won several teaching awards at MSU as well, and is actively involved in the Interactive Studies 203 course at MSU, one of the largest enrollment earth sciences courses in the country.

I was forced to buy this for class. Yes ...

I was forced to buy this for class. Yes it is a book, and yes it tells you about Natural Hazards and Disasters but you can get the previous version online for a fraction of the cost and the only real difference i saw was page numbers and the homework questions.

Judy McKay Tells It Like It Is, with a Big Smile

I have had the pleasure of working with Judy for almost a decade now, first as a consultant working in her test team at a (long defunct) dot-com era start-up, and more recently with her as an associate working with RBCS from time to time. Judy is always ready to tell the honest truth, and always in a friendly, happy way, and that's the way reading this book feels: Like a friend giving you honest advice, advice you really need and advice you're really happy to receive.

You can tell Judy's been there, done that, and gotten the silly launch T-shirt quite a few times. Here, she shares with you what she's learned about managing a test team in that process. Some of it is painful, but it needs to be said. Much of it is hopeful, positive, and downright funny, though. She'll inspire you to do your best work as a manager, even under tough circumstances.

I already knew this from working with her, and now everyone who reads this book will know: Judy clearly loves being a test professional, and she really wants to see test teams that are well-lead by fellow enthusiasts for the profession. Technical management is quite a challenge

This is a good book for those that have chosen to manage technical people. It provides the truth about how it really is as opposed to how it is theoretically supposed to be in any technical leadership role. With the ups and downs in the world of software quality and software development this book is a required tool for those in technical leadership roles that have maintain a world in whic both type of professionals must live. Selecting the right employees, promotions, layoffs, and the aftermath of it all is what a technical leader has to deal with as they rise and fall. A roller coaster ride does not halfway describe the life that one lives in carrying out the required responsibilities and duties in a high tech environment as a leader. Fortunately the author of this book, Judy McKay has over twenty years experience in software management and tells the truth about the profession so what she conveys will help anyone that will be, or has already been in technical management. I would strongly suggest to keep this book at your desk at all times, you will need it as you hold tight for the high tech roller coaster ride. This book is strongly recommended as a reference guide as you begin to or continue to blaze your trail.

I wish that we had more people like Judy involved in software development. She really inspired you to make the tough decision that will ensure project success. I found this book both educational and inspirational. A worthwhile read to anyone frustrated with problems in modern software development processes. I would recommend this to anyone consider a future in technical management or software testing. Yes as software engineers we do spend much of our time performing these roles.

Solomon and Marcolf is known for being both important and mysterious. It pits wise Solomon, famous from the Bible, against a wily peasant named Marcolf. One of its two parts is a dialogue, in which the king and jester, sage and fool, prophet and blasphemer bandy back and forth questions and comments. Whereas Solomon is solemn and pompous, Marcolf resorts to low language and earthy topics. The other part comprises twenty short chapters in which Marcolf tricks Solomon time and again. These episodes are as impudent and scatological as is the dialogue. Together, the two parts constitute a rudimental prose novel or “rogue biography.”

Cited by Bakhtin in Rabelais and His World, Solomon and Marcolf is widely known by name. But until now it has not been translated into any modern language. The present volume offers an introduction, followed by the Latin and English, detailed commentary, and reproductions of woodcut illustrations from the 1514 edition. Appendixes help readers understand the origins and influence of a work that was composed around 1200, that attained its greatest popularity in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, and that has the potential still today to delight and instruct.

A Monumental Edition of a Smutty Work

This brief proto-novel is given the full scholarly treatment in this critical edition; imagine a 450-page book devoted to one episode of "South Park." There's an English translation with the Latin on facing pages, and a wealth of commentary. S&M is a coarse, scatological work, but it underscores the fact that prose fiction has always been a rebellious, subversive genre.

About the Author

Born in London, Colin Falconer began traveling in his teens after realizing that making it as a professional soccer player was simply not in the stars for him. He hitchhiked around Europe and North Africa and explored much of Asia before moving to Australia, where he freelanced for leading newspapers and magazines as well as TV and radio. Colin raised two daughters with his late wife, Helen, and volunteered in the ambulance service for over thirteen years. His travels have served as inspiration for his forty-and-counting novels in print. Ranging from vivid historical intrigues to contemporary thrillers, Falconer’s work is enjoyed by a wide international audience and has been translated into twenty-three languages.

Interesting account of a fascinating queen

My predilection for historical fiction about royals is well-documented, so when I was approached about reviewing Colin Falconer's Isabella: Braveheart of France I was easily convinced, especially as I had just watched the episode of the BBC4 series She-Wolves: England's Early Queens about Isabella. And while Falconer's novel covers all the pertinent information of Isabella's life and gives us some inkling of what may have driven her to take over the English throne, I had a hard time connecting or staying connected to the main players in the novel, largely due to the stylistic choices made by the author.

Isabella's story is told from a third person perspective in the present tense in a rather fragmentary style and a somewhat dispassionate tone, with lots of scene breaks and short chapters. This makes it hard to settle into the narrative and connect to Isabella as a character. She starts out sympathetic enough, but during the course of the novel becomes embittered – not completely without cause obviously – and once we come to the end of the novel I found it hard to like her or be understanding of some of the choices she makes, trading a negligent husband for a domineering and callous lover she doesn't even seem to actually like. I also found the way that Isabella's internal dialogue isn't rendered in a clearly defined way problematic, as on several occasions it served more to confuse than to add to the story.

The novel covers Isabella's life from the moment she learns she's to marry Edward until the moment she's finally and irrevocably free from the marriage. Falconer manages to portray Isabella and Edward in a way that makes exceedingly clear how tragic their situation actually was. Isabella is traded away in marriage to ensure peace between England and France, only to find her husband is more interested in the stable boys than in her and she is quickly entrenched in a fierce rivalry with Edward's lover Piers Gaveston. It's this disappointment in her marriage, that fact that she was never first in her husband's affections that causes her slow embitterment and the ultimate breakdown of their partnership. Falconer spends quite some time building up Isabella's considerable political acumen and Edward's dislike of kingship, both due to the restrictions it places upon him and due to the fact that he can never measure up to the legend of his father, Edward I.

At one point in their marriage, after Gaveston is murdered by Edward's barons, they create a smoothly working partnership with Isabella masterminding a kingdom and power for Edward that allows him to avenge his beloved Piers' death. Despite knowing how the story ends, I still found myself hoping they'd work it out and have if not a happy marriage at least a solid one. Falconer seems to be hesitant to portray either of them as the villain in the marriage, instead squarely placing the blame on the Despenser, who becomes Edward's confidant after he loses Piers. Despenser is a venal, cruel, and greedy man who seemingly without conscience destroys people and families for his own gain. It's this that prompts the barons to take action against Edward, but it's not the sole reason Isabella decides to lead them. She is the proverbial woman scorned and she decides to take her fate in her own hands.

She's also driven by her affair with one of Edward's baron Lord Roger Mortimer. A man who has seemingly coveted Isabella from the first time he sees her. While the affair is historically accurate, Falconer never managed to make me believe it. It just seemed so abrupt and, while passionate, just as devoid of true love and companionship as Isabella's marriage to Edward. I think that was the point that the novel truly started to lose me, because I just couldn't wrap my head around this burgeoning affair. Add to this the fact that at this point I'd also lost any overview of which lord was which and whether they were the elder or the younger or newly created and the last third of the novel became a bit of a slog.

Isabella: Braveheart of France is an interesting account of a fascinating queen, but it suffered from its fragmentary pacing, dispassionate tone, and the seeming lack of loving connection between Isabella and Mortimer. If you're looking for a novel to familiarise yourself with Isabella's story, Isabella: Braveheart of France is a good choice, though it doesn't tell her entire story, since it stops after she and the barons dethrone Edward II. If you're looking for a satisfying love story or drama, however, you might be left a little underwhelmed by Isabella and Mortimer.

I am embarassed for the author

Isabella has a great story, this is NOT the telling of it. The story is lost behind typos, poor English. One chapter repeats the first three paragraphs of the chapter before it...word for word. Sentences have words such as "She" capitalized in the middle. The book is nearly unreadable, due to the worst editing I have ever seen. The story was a disappointment for this author, don't give up on him, but pass on this book.

many digital errors

So many typos that it was hard to read with enjoyment. It is a great story and probably would have gotten a 4 or 5 star review, but I couldn't ignore the incorrect tenses, wrong pronouns, repeat phrases and multiple digital errors. Sloppy

About the Author
Gavin Levy is a native Londoner who came to the United States in 1999. He received his ALAM from the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Arts and is also a graduate of the Academy of Live and Recorded Arts. From October 1992 through July 1995, Mr. Levy studied theatre at the world renowned Academy Of Live & Recorded Arts.


Mr. Levy has been involved in educational theatre with the Dragon Drama Theatre Company in London. As an active member of the company, Mr. Levy organizes and coordinates acting workshops and continues to teach acting and improvisation. He also has written scripts for workshops, directed plays, and been an instrumental force in after-show workshops designed to educate students. Levy has over twenty years of theatre experience, including acting, instructing, directing and writing.

275 Acting Games: Connected provides a fine workbook of theatre games for developing acting skills. While it's intended for the young adult actor, any actor entering theatre will find this an outstanding workbook which outlines connections between exercises, purpose, and industry objectives. Drama collections must have this!

If you teach Drama you must own this book

I don't know how else to tell it to you but you must own this book. The games are great, they teach a variety of skills, I think over thirty, and the kids love them. I do these games with my high schoolers and they work great. I would recomend this book to any new or Veteran drama teacher.

What a piece of work!

I love this book. It's filled with great activities (I don't want to call them games, as it reflects too much on playing) that are fully adjustable to suit any group in terms of experience, age and sex. I've been using it over and over, and the ideas that I get from this book are simply fabulous. What I appreciate most, is the fact that each activity is described in full details and you also know the reason for doing a specific activity. An investment as far as I'm concerned, and I'm very proud owning this book.

About the Author

Amarinder Singh, who is from the royal family of Patiala, was educated at the Doon School. After graduating from the National Defence Academy at Khadakawasla and the Indian Military Academy at Dehradun, he was commissioned into the 2nd Battalion of the Sikh regiment. During the 1965 war with Pakistan, he was ADC to the GOC-in-C, Western Command, in whose theatre of operations the entire war was fought. Later, as member of Parliament , he was a member of the Parliamentary Defence Committee. Amarinder Singh spent four terms in the Punjab Legislature once as Minister and then as Chief Minister of Punjab from 2002 to 2007. He presently represents the state Congress Party. He has authored two books: Lest We Forget: The History of the Indian Army from 1947-65 and A Ridge Too Far: War in the Kargil Heights 1999
