In 1987 The Closing of the American Mind, Allan Bloom's famously ferocious critique of the corrosive effects of political correctness in American universities, exploded like a bomb in the halls of the academy; even today, its conservative analysis is constantly enlarged upon by academics and political pundits alike, from Dinesh D'Souza to William J. Bennett. In The Opening of the American Mind, Lawrence W. Levine has produced a direct rebuttal. The conservative complainers are, he says, discomfited by perfectly healthy developments in education. Levine argues that opening the academic canon to cultures beyond Western civilization is a natural and laudable outgrowth of the increasing diversity of America. The universities are changing, says Levine, to keep in touch with the real world, and are "doing a more thorough and cosmopolitan job ... than ever before."

Responding to critics of the university as a bastion of PC, historian Levine (Black Culture and Black Consciousness) provides some worthy context. Curricula have always been evolving, he stresses, and historians long ignored non-Western and social history. The university, he adds, has also been evolving; however, his observation that the balkanized campus merely reflects endemic American fragmentation ignores how universities can act to further separatism or integration. Levine is most effective in explaining how the Great Books and Western Civilization courses developed to shape American identity after WWI, and how American literature entered the canon 50 years ago. Many historians, he notes, did not accept the "melting pot" notion and believed that ethnic distinctiveness could be prized; every criticism of integration today has been made before. Levine contends rationally that multicultural studies and "the new historiography" do not cause fragmentation but reflect it. Still, however accurate his argument may be in general, it has a detached air and will not fully engage those who decry campus excesses. 40,000 first printing; author tour.

Levine (history, Univ. of California, Berkeley) effectively rebuts best-selling works by Allan Bloom (The Closing of the American Mind, LJ 5/1/97), Dinesh D'Sousa (Illiberal Education, LJ 3/15/91), and other conservative academicians who say they fear for the future of civilization because "political correctness" is diluting the quality of college-level instruction. As he did in his book of essays on culture, The Unpredictable Past (LJ 5/15/93), Levine shows how the experience of ordinary Americans has constantly transformed the study of history. For example, he points out that American literary history was not offered in colleges until the end of World War II, and English literary history played a negligible role in the academic curriculum in America before 1900. Levine asserts that college instructors must embrace new ways of learning and be receptive to all constituencies of students, including the working class, minorities, and women. readable but inadequate

mr. levine's book, though balanced and thoroughly researched, is by no means an adequate response to bloom's controversial CLOSING OF THE AMERICAN MIND. mr. levine is a historian skilled at manipulating quotes and thereby giving us a convincing (but distorted) picture of the conservative critics in higher education, while, alas, avoiding the central question. he simply ignores the real issues troubling campuses all over the country today. he makes his best point by demonstrating that, historically, the canon has been fluid and changing; but that hardly justifies what is being taught in college courses today. it's not so much that the multiculturalist "canon" is wrong or that it would corrupt the old values--the real problem is that almost all of the new books are weak and boring and customer-friendly. THE ESSENTIAL PARADOX, FOR ANYONE WHO HAS PAID ATTENTION TO TODAY'S COLLEGE EDUCATION, IS THAT IN THE ATTEMPT TO OPEN THE MINDS OF STUDENTS, THE "ISTS" HAVE IN FACT CLOSED AND NARROWED MANY, ALL TOO MANY, WITH BOOKS THAT HARDLY EVER STUMULATE A BRAIN CELL.
whatever bloom's faults and prejudices may be, his book is written with genuine passion and concern, and ten years after its publication it disturbs us still, because so much of what it says applies to what we see everyday on every american campus. mr. levine is the typical academic star of today, always correct and smooth, but he has to do better than this to meet bloom's challenge.

Levine does not stoop to conquer.

From a liberal's point of view, the only thing wrong with this book is that it lacks the corrosive name-calling and histrionic forecasting that have made the writings of Levine's critics (and targets of criticism) such potent shelf commodities. This is not a call to arms in Pat Buchanan's "cultural war"; it is a level-headed reminder of the longevity and redundancy of a war which we have always fought--the much-politicized war over education. Everyone wants to know: are children these days being taught well? Are they reading enough Shakespeare? Have our schools turned to mush? In his answer to the last question, Levine would argue that no, they haven't. His opponents would say, Yes, and it's all because of the PC, resentful, tribalistic, Marxist lemmings (see Harold Bloom's "The Western Canon"; Bloom has a fascination with lemmings which borders on the unholy) who have infiltrated our schools and turned our children away from the great classics of literature which every young scholar must read. Levine's point is that, historically, no one has ever really been able to agree on which books are classics and which books are necessary. Politics have always been involved in this debate, just as reactionary thinking has always been the powerful enemy of "advocates" of inclusive reading. Levine explores the history of our reactions to changes in curriculum and course-reading as a way of exposing the snobbery at hand. He does not, alas, call attention to himself by labeling the more prominent snobs "fascists" or "regressive poopoo-heads." That is why his work does not measure up, in its appeal, to the writings of today's conservative critics: because there is no bloodshed in it, no goring of the enemy. Grace don't sell a million, which is why the Blooms in this world don't bother to be graceful. Sorry, Prof. Levine; next time, cuss

About the Author
Rogier Noldus is Senior Specialist, Intelligent Networks, at Ericsson Telecommunications, Netherlands.� Within Ericsson, he is responsible for the development and implementation of the CAMEL technology.� Rogier has played a key role in the development of the CAMEL standard in ETSI and 3GPP.� He has chaired various conferences on CAMEL, has been speaker at various other international conferences, and represents Ericsson at the ETSI and 3GPP standardization organizations.

disappointed

This book appears to completely omit the possibility of direct gsmSCF to gsmSRF communication, This is especially serious when this is the first gsmSRF scenario discussed and diagrammed by other authors and the definitive 3GPP TS 03.78 & 3G TS 29.078 standards. This interface, present in CAMEL from phase 2, is being used in the new and interesting CAMEL services such as CRBT. This is a basic and serious omission and has undermined my faith in the rest of the book.

Author's excellent narrative skills coupled with easy-to-follow logical flow makes this a personal favourite. Its a must-have for folks who want to learn CAMEL networks or those who want to refresh their knowledge about CAMEL networks or those who want to augment gaps in their understanding of CAMEL networks. The book, in my humble opinion, has both, depth and breadth... a very rare quality in itself...

A comprehensive volume touching on several different areas that would be nice to be informed of. Or, even to practice in daily dealings. Perhaps not as all inclusive a program that you will wave a hand and say, "these are not the droids your looking for. Move along!" Still with mastery of the areas covered it is the next best thing. For instance the 20 parts of the Neuro-Linguistic Programming technique. Master this with the Hypnosis mentioned here and you will not need to wave a hand.

At any rate, there are several cold evenings by the fire worth of thoughtfull consideration in these volumes. I did skate out of a traffic ticket. Perhaps you will find yourself in a situation that it would be very handy to have some of this wisdom floating around your cranium.

Great Book With Some New Perspectives On Psychology!

"Psychology Simply Explained" by Medina is a very thorough delineation of the classic techniques which provide rationale for the mind and human behavior. Medina begins by explaining the conscious mind, ego and appearances, as well as, the painstaking process of sorting out the truth.

The discussion on free will challenges readers to contemplate how a brain decides, self-actualization and the making of uncontrolled choices. Behavior is a factor which is governed either by internal or outside
influences.

Modern theology presupposes free will in making choices. Without free will, there could be no concept of a Judgment Day. Each of the 10 Commandments presupposes conscious decisions to disobey commandments
set forth in religious doctrines.

The brain is seen as a complex group of neurons configured in various networks be they random or organized. Both genes and the environment impact these brain networks. Procedural rationality deals with how
decisions are made, the structure of tasks and the actor who brings all of this information into focus.

Modern computer science deals with systematic rationality in the area of artificial intelligence (AI). AI seeks to establish logically based rule structures from continuous input provided by communities of experts.

The brain works to empower individuals and control others. The perceptive person looks for physical cues, continuous scrutiny, listening and observation.

The book has an excellent section on hypnosis which is a trance state induced by well accepted suggestions. Herein lies a disruption of conscious control to awaken the unconscious. Hypnosis may be used for enhancing sleep, treating addictions and managing phobias.

Prospective subjects for hypnosis need to be prepared for what to expect as a consequence of this experience. The concepts of mesmerizing, neurolinguistic programming and dissociation are set forth as mind altering techniques. The power of suggestivity is demonstrated through the prism of the placebo effect.

Overall,"Psychology Simply Explained" by Medina is an important contribution to the existing body of psychology research. The complexity of free will is examined in great depth with the author approaching the subject from more than a single point of view.

I wasn't sure what to expect at first but I have to say that I was quite pleased with the contents of this text. I will not go through an entire breakdown of the text's contents but suffice to say that if you are interested in psychology and hypnosis that you will find this very interesting. Author Kevin Jobson crafts a unique blend of psychological and hypnotism precepts which result in leaving the reader more empowered through the use of free will which is untethered to traditional notions of self-control, self-improvement, and the control of others.

This is a valuable guide to the person willing to change themselves and their environment through self-changing neuro-linguistic programming, hypnosis, and mesmerism so as to influence the change they want to see in other people they interact with. Well done! Five stars for cutting edge!

The best and also simplest bread recipe in the World.

I got sucked into the international whirlwind of no- knead artisan bread when Jim Layhey published his recipe and u-tube video through the New York Times. It is now the only way I make bread and his book "My Bread" is my bible. However, I came across Artisan Bread with Steve on u-tube recently and I liked the way he extended Jim Lahey's bread revolution even further by developing lots of ideas for flavouring the bread and using the basic bread recipe to make other things, like pretzels, pizzas etc. The only thing I disagree with him about is cooking time, my preference is for more cooking time to get a crunchy crust as Lahey recommends, but that's personal. I would highly recommend Steve's u-tube tutorials and his bread book if you are keen to make the easiest bread in the World, possibly the easiest cooking recipe full stop. I mix my dough in the evening and cook it the next day whenever it suits me. I now prefer to cook in pyrex rather than my cast iron pot, so you don't need anything expensive to cook bread. I would also recommend you check out the New York Times no-knead bread recipe on u-tube which started this whole phenomenon and give it a go -even/especially if you have never cooked bread before. It is no fail if you follow the recipe and it will be better than any bread you have bought from a shop. Thanks Steve and Jim.

No Knead Dough Recipe Book

I've been baking no knead breads for over 5 years and I use various methods, books, videos to get the recipes. A lot of times I just take the conventional method and convert it to no knead. The problem with just the one method Steve uses is you should not leave dairy in a dough to proof on the counter for 12 to 18 hours. That is why I use Artisan Bread in 5 as another method, the dough proofs than goes in the Fridge overnight. So you are able to use egg, milk, butter etc.

A lot of Steve's recipes are based on Lahey's method of flour, water yeast and salt. In using this method, say for dinner rolls, they lack butter, milk, egg etc which makes a good dinner roll. In other words, the dough is not enriched like you can do with another no knead method that goes in the Fridge to proof. Except for shapes and some toppings, the dough is the same. I followed Steve on YouTube also, but I have Lahey's book and Artisan Bread in 5 by Hertzberg and Francois book, which I purchased from Amazon. I use both methods, but mostly ABin5 as it is more versatile. Try the olive oil dough from that book. Great for olive bread and pizza.

Compare Steve's recipe for dinner rolls and Ciabatta rolls, they are very close and the recipe for Ciabatta is not how it is made. The dinner roll recipe is another story. For most of us, that's not the dinner roll we all know and love. Do your homework as I have done for over 5 years if you like no knead. This is Jim Lahey's basic recipe but I would not make Ciabatta as shown or make dinner rolls and cinnamon buns with this dough, they need to be enriched.

Steve's basic recipe (Lahey) is a great way for some breads and rolls and Steve puts out a good video to learn this method. This is a good method if you want to start or get back into bread baking as Steve mentioned. The round peasant bread made in the Dutch oven is the bread I grew up eating. It's typical of Italian Bread and the one I make the most using this method.

I just got a new hobby.

I came across one of Steve's no knead bread utube videos and found it very well made, right to the point. Steve is a master at his craft and teaches us we too can master the no knead mesthod of bread making. I bought his book so I would have a ready reference on hand while producing some of the finest bread I can remember. You will love his book and handy links to his u tube videos. My heart felt thanks to Steve for giving me a new hobbie that I don't need to toss hunderds of dollars at.

Excellent reference to read the Bible in its entirety

I found out about this version when reading a book that suggested it as a resource for reading The Bible. The book is idea for reading the Bible in its entirety or reading the individual Testaments. Given the chronological aspect of this version, reading individual books in the Bible is better suited for other versions. I purchased the print version and started reading it on January 1. I quickly felt that the print version was more cumbersome, and wished that I had not let some of the reviews of the kindle version sway me against it. I knew that I wanted to read this, so I ended up purchasing the kindle version. At that point, reading became much smoother. I ended up using both my kindle and the cloud reader to read through it (be sure to sync your kindle before you put it down, or you end up having to skip ahead in the cloud). The interesting thing is that once I switched from the print version to electronic, it was so much faster to read, that I ended up deciding that while I would read it every day, I would not let the dates on it determine my stopping point. Instead, I read until I felt that I'd reached a stopping point for the day. Some days, I had less time to read, and others I might read a month's work at one sitting. The end result was that I read the entire book in 96 days. I do not feel that the speed hampered my comprehension. I did skim over things like the measurements or the representatives of each of the tribes, but I absorbed the essence.

The only real con I have with this version is that it might be pushing it to try to compress the readings into 365 days. Some of the readings were shorter, but some of the more complex readings were more than I might think would ordinarily fit in a single day.

What I liked best about this was that it felt like I was receiving a mini sermon with each of the sections. I really appreciated the historical background in places, especially when it came to understanding the warfare of the time period. Other times, it helps that he refers to earlier or later parts of the Bible that help explain a section or to match prophecy, just as examples.

If you want to start reading this book, do not feel that you have to wait until January 1 to begin reading. If your goal is to read it every day, then place a bookmark and be sure that you've read until the next section. I do recommend the electronic version. You can do as I did, and read it on your desktop or laptop in the amazon cloud reader, use a kindle, or use the kindle cloud app on your tablet or other device.

This book really puts in perspective how the timeline of the Bible (probably) works. Smith is perfectly clear that there is a certain amount of guesswork involved in the relative timing of certain parts of the Bible. I found particularly interesting how the minor prophets overlapped in time--mostly around the time of the Babylonian exile. I very much enjoyed Smith's commentary on surrounding historical events.

This will not work for a person's only copy of the Bible, because Smith combines repetitive sections in the Bible and provides the references where these sections can be found. This applies primarily to the law given to the Israelites in the first five books of the bible and the Gospels, but there are also some sections covered by both 1 & 2 Kings and 1 & 2 Chronicles.

I actually originally bought this at a Christian bookstore a number of years ago and only finally got around to reading it last year. I enjoyed it so much that I bought this copy for my mom as a Christmas present.

For the record, there is no particular need to read this in exactly a year. Read at your own pace.

Great for the busy person who still wants to study

My man loves this.
He often gets so busy with work and life that he doesn't have the time to spend on the Bible studies that he loves to go to.
I felt really bad about this, because I know that it really helps to enrich his connection to God and being a recovering drug addict (a few years sober from all intoxicants now, yay!) it is really necessary to keep balance in his life.
So, for Christmas I got him some daily reading Bible's. This was the larger of the two and he has really gotten a lot of use so far. He does not read it absolutely every day, but I see him reading it most days and when I called him this afternoon he had his co-worker (and best friend) reading it aloud for the both of them while they drove to work lol.
Each day is a few pages of reading, with multiple sections that connect to one another and kind of back each other up. I attached some pictures below that will hopefully give you a good idea of the books contents.

Overall a great read and very helpful to a beginner

Well written, well photographed. I'm a beginning woodworker and didn't have anything but the most basic knowledge (i.e. "That's made of wood alright") when I picked up this book. The first few pages were efficient at teaching me how woods are different and explained why wood does what it does. The following chapters led me to a basic understanding of woodworking tools and what they do, how they work etc. Then there were the practical projects in the latter half of the book. I don't have all the tools required to do most of them (including a plainer, or that special saw they use to cut the dovetail joints) but hopefully I'll be able to get them soon to complete the projects the book suggests.

Excellent guide for starting on the "craftsmanship" of woodworking

I'm fairly new to woodworking. What I really enjoyed about this book, is the multiple options presented when performing a task. For example, you may not have certain power tools available to you. So when you need to make a mortise, you can use handtools, or a drillpress, or just a drill. You are able to get through the entire book with relatively inexpensive handtools. This allows you to choose what level of power tools you want to use based on your preference and your budget/space available.

The 2 projects: A simple bench and cabinet, can be easily tweaked to match dimensions you're looking for. They cover woodworking without using nails or screws, which means creating connections between wood using various joining techniques. If you'd rather put boards together with screws and such (which don't hold up as well in the long-run) or if you're looking to perform house construction, then this isn't your book. This book focuses on the the craft of woodworking, which means taking your time to join and sculpt wood to make your project.

Perfect introduction, very enjoyable read

First I need to point out that I am an armchair woodworker, unfortunately I have not had the pleasure (yet) to do the various exercises/projects. This was my first woodworking book.

The author has a vast experience not only in woodworking, but also, and perhaps more importantly at this level, in *teaching* woodworking. He can explain the various concepts and techniques very eloquently, precisely and concisely. The descriptions are so accurate that it feels like you are actually seeing it done - no, doing it yourself, even though you are (like I was) sitting in a train. The pictures are also excellent, and the balance between text, pictures, drawings and sidebars denotes first-class editing.
From a macro level, the book is also carefully structured. The first part describes the properties of wood and how they affect woodworking. Then machines are explained one by one, followed by hand tools (I would have done it the other way around, but never mind). After that, the student is taken through a number of basic exercises, in many cases giving various choices of hand tools and machines. Finally, there are a couple of projects.

Be warned, reading the book takes some effort on your side. Especially if you are unfamiliar with technical terms, which are always introduced before they are used in context, you will have to look them up again in the index, which is by the way complete and functional. The author's writing is packed with information (which is good), and he is explaining difficult operations so you sometimes have to read the same paragraph twice to understand how to do things properly. When later projects build on previously-learnt material, the reader is referred to the specific page instead of repeating the explanation.
