A heavy background in mathematics and physics is not required beyond basic courses in calculus, differential equations, and calculus-based elementary physics.
The first three chapters introduce quantum mechanics (using the Schr�dinger equations), quantum statistics, and the free-electron theory of metals. Chapters 4 and 5 deal with the WKB approximation and perturbation theory. Chapters 6 and 7 focus on the periodic potential of a crystalline solid and electronic energy bands.
To increase the effectiveness of the material as a learning aid, all developments are carefully worked out, complete details are given for each of the derivations, and successive derivations are developed on a firm basis provided by the preceding material. Throughout the text, examples from solid-state physics illustrate specific applications and demonstrate the principal results that can be deduced by means of quantum theory. Numerous problems (with selected answers), projects, and exercises have been incorporated to facilitate mastery of the text material.

Good cheap intro quantum book

I have had little background in QM, but this book seems to explain the basics along with the fundamentals in a logical order. (Nice philosophical and logical development of Schro's Eqn and operators too) Arranged in a somewhat strange manner, it definitely uncovers some of the more misunderstood concepts (such as Dirac notation and dispersion relations), and at this price it's probably well worth it! Mostly based on applications dealing with solid state physics.

A good beginner's book on QM

This book was suggested to me by a PhD student. I had previously used R.F Pierret's Advanced Semiconductor Fundamentals for a Solid state device course in grad school & it had some initial chapters dedicated to Schrodinger equation solutions & arriving at energy bands using Bloch's theorem. But I was in need of a textbook that went into the details of all that & I'm glad that Fromhold's book did just that. I'm yet to finish reading it but it has served its purpose. My initial goal before reading this book was to review my understanding of wavefunctions & to get acquainted with many-particle systems (namely Boltzmann, Fermi-Dirac & Bose-Einstein statistics). The introductory chapter & the subsequent chapter on Quantum statistics seemed well designed to meet my goals. As a beginner I feel it covers all that a new student to QM would like to learn before moving on to advanced literature in this field. I would definitely recommed senior-level undergrads & grad students to refer to this book for any course on Quantum Physics or Condensed Matter Physics.

As a student in the area of computational nanoelectronics, I also benefitted from the WKB approximation & Perturbation theory sections in this book. The WKB approximation at Wikipedia seemed much more difficult to follow.

The only time I felt I had to skip some pages was in the electron tunneling section where the math bacame quite complicated but then that is to be expected from any book on QM. As for the writing style & presentation of the author I would rate it as OK. There were some chapters that I had to re-read just to ensure I had understood some concepts correctly. But the book never turned drab. It kept me engrossed such that I was able to read some chapters in a single stretch. I never attempted any of the exercise problems since I was studying this book only to quickly enhance my knowledge of QM & not for any course that I was taking in grad school. But there are a lot of problems (which the author calls "project") showing up now & then while reading the text.

Overall, I consider it a very satisfactory purchase. A big thanks to Amazon & Bluemoonbooks for delivering the book on time.

Rigorous and No-nonsense Approach to Quantum Mechanics with Emphasis on Solid State Applications

The book starts from an elementary stance with little demanded of the reader. All the reader has to possess is some college exposure to coursework in Physics, typically a second year or sophomore course in Modern Physics.

The diagrams and schematics in the first chapter are fairly well done, leading the reader through the prerequisites of Quantum Theory which include wave equations and Fourier analysis in a vectorial format. However, the book quickly progresses in depth and intensity, both mathematically and physically, into the abstractions that typify Quantum Mechanics (QM), delving into wave analysis, matrix mechanics pertaining to waves, atomic and sub-atomic models and related mathematical formality while steering the reader progressively toward problems in Solid State Physics. Though diagrams are present, the reader has to follow the mathematical treatment and rigor in the various derivations of QM equations without losing sight of the physical implications, interpretations and meaning within the realm of the microscopic world where Classical Mechanics does not quite apply.

The book is fairly vigorous and rigorous, especially for Engineering students (typically your Electrical and Materials Engineering ones) so it should not be tackled by someone who wants to attain concepts behind Quantum Theory in a fairly general "layman" manner, but one who is prepared to learn with a level of intensity. It is recommended that the reader has at least a third year undergraduate or junior level of Physics or an equivalent background in Physical Chemistry and exposure to mathematical topics such as Applied Vector Analysis, Multivariable Calculus, Probability and Statistics, Matrix Theory, Differential Equations and related background in Applied Mathematics. A strong background in Electromagnetism in Physics or Electrical Engineering is also desirable for the readership.

All in all - a book not for the faint of heart but a challenge to those who are seeking rigor in learning Quantum Theory with applications in Solid State Physics in a terse treatment in no more than 430 pages, including preface and appendix.
